CURRICULUM COMMENT
Tena koutou Katoa,

Nau mai ki te wiki o te reo Maori

This week is Māori Language Week and all classes are singing waiata and learning new phrases.

Welcome back to level 2 at school everyone.  Our children have settled back into school life so well and are already well into their learning. Teachers are also enjoying being back face to face with students.  Thank you all for heeding our request to drop off and pick up and to using the app and wearing a mask if you need to come into school.

Our New Cook Book is for Pre Sale...but just to you!

The Wānaka Primary School new cookbook called 'BITE Mountain munches, lakeside lunches and everything in between' is about to be available for presale just for you, our school community, so you can purchase it early ready for those who deserve a very special Christmas present.  It is a gorgeous book with a variety of exciting and everyday dishes.  You will not be disappointed...so keep an eye on your inbox as the flyer will be out soon and you don't want to miss out on the deal being offered.

Cross Country

The Upper Clutha and COPSSA cross country challenges have been cancelled as we are still in level 2.  We will most likely give our WPS students a chance to run a cross country in the next week or so, but without spectators I am afraid.

Swimming

Pod 5 goes swimming next week and Pod 4 the week beginning 27th September.

Pantomime Auditions

These have started this week for the year 5 and 6 students who have been involved in our drama club. They will continue for the next couple of weeks until all parts have been allocated.

Parent Surveys

Thank you to the 236 families who completed the parent survey earlier this term. The Board considered this survey, along with the teachers survey and discussed these results which were very positive.  I have attached the results of the parents' survey here.   The % relates to the agree and agree strongly responses to each item in the survey and where there is a substantial numbers of 'not sure' responses these have been included as well.  The questions/responses were categorised under themes e.g. well-being, so you can get an overall picture of parents' perceptions of the different aspects of the school.  We can see at a glance the areas we need to work on to ensure parents understand aspects of our school curriculum and organisation and we can also see, looking at the staff one as well, where we do well.  There are very few responses that featured 'disagree' and even less with 'strongly disagree'.   Both surveys together show our teachers and our parents believe that learning, teaching and school life are greatly valued, effective and that Wānaka Primary School is a positive, happy environment and parents feel very welcome and involved in their children's education.  If you have any questions after reading these results please get in touch with me for a chat.

Jack the Lamb

Look who came to school with Leah, our Senco today...and not only has this little chap been visiting some of our students, he has been following Lucy around the admin block as she gambols from one room into the other.  Or Lucy is following him wiping up the floor as he is not toilet trained yet.  Did we get any work done this morning by our office manager?  No, too busy having cuddles.

Thank You

Thanks to the wonderful McCulloch family for providing yummy cakes for the staff's morning tea.

Ellesse Andrews Visit to Pod 3

Pod 3 were lucky enough to have Ellesse Andrews return to WPS to share her silver Olympic medal.  Ellesse used to attend WPS and loved our support while she was in Tokyo.  We are so proud of her and she has inspired many after placing second in the Keirin at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours, the current goal is:  'we give our best effort'.

TERM 4 ACTIVITIES

Wānaka Junior Touch

Wānaka Junior Touch will be played in Term 4 2021 on Monday nights at Wānaka Show Grounds (Rugby oval) for Year 5 through to Year 10.

The focus will be on fun, participation, skill development, and learning the game.

Season Start: Monday 18 October 2021 (No games Labour Day 25th October)

Season End: Monday 13 December 2021

Times: Teams will be allocated their time slot (being either 4-5pm or 5-6pm) once registration numbers and teams are finalised.

Teams:  We will allocate players into even teams (so players may get moved during the first weeks if games are lopsided).

Grades: Grades will likely be mixed teams for i) Years 5 & 6 ii) Years 7 & 8 and iii) Years 9 & 10.

Playing Uniform: Everyone will be allocated a team and a playing singlet.  If you have a playing singlet from last year please indicate that on the registration form and bring the playing singlet to the first game.  Due to the ordering process there may be a delay in everyone getting their uniforms.  On the first Monday we will check uniform sizes.

No bare feet, spikes, and rugby boots with removable sprigs are allowed.

Registrations will close 3 October 2021 so we can finalise the teams and the draw.  Our aim is to find a team for every junior that is keen to play but we do have limited number of playing fields and capacity for some age groups.

Cost: $40 per child and payment online via Credit Card.
