IMPORTANT NOTICES

Creatives in Schools

Many thanks to ex-pupil Cameron Tippett, and his dad Gavin, from Mt Iron Geodrill, who did an amazing job moving our donated power poles and installing them into their new home at the front entrance of the school.  Over the next couple of weeks students from Pod 7 will be painting their designs onto them.

Working Bee

We would appreciate help this Saturday 9th September anytime between 10am and 3pm for jobs such as painting or plywood cutting.  If you can help, please email, kathn@wanaka.school.nz.

Road Works on Aubrey Anderson Intersection

The Eastbound lane on a small section of Aubrey Road just past Anderson Road is closed to traffic between the hours of 7am and 6pm each day until Friday 8th September.

Traffic will be able to travel on Aubrey east to west as normal however, west to east bound traffic will need to detour via Anderson Road and the state highway.  The pedestrian/bike path will still be open.

Please note these works and lane closure will not affect the bus routes and buses will run as normal.

BOARD BUZZ

Board update

Last night's meeting saw the Board Members Jump Jamming and playing games led by our Student Leadership Group.  The Student Leaders did a wonderful presentation to the Board explaining the current leadership roles and the training opportunities they have had.  Murray Gadd followed with his presentation on the writing PLD he has been working on with our teachers and students.  Wendy had the Board Members put their thinking caps on for some Strategic Direction for 2024-2026.  Francis presented the finance report which is far from doom and gloom and lastly we have the School Board Mid Term Elections coming up, with the election date confirmed as Wednesday 15th November 2023.

The next Board Meeting is scheduled for Monday 30th October, 5pm in the School Staffroom.
CURRICULUM COMMENT
Isn't the weather amazing.  A fabulous day for the UC Cross Country today and hopefully for our last snow/schoolbased day on Thursday.

Writing Professional Development

Dr. Murray Gadd has been working in school observing teachers working with their writing groups and supporting them in continuing to improve learner outcomes.  He shared his purpose and work in the school at the Board Meeting last night and is leading a staff workshop after school today on working with gifted writers.  After the staff workshop today Murray is meeting with the leadership team to give feedback on his work over this last term.  This is his last session with us at Wānaka Primary School and it has been an absolute delight to watch him at work with our teachers and kids.  Next term he will consider our end of year data in writing, and along with a teacher and student survey, will then analyse the results and share these in a report with the Board, which I will then share with our community via the newsletter.

Save our Mohua Day - Friday 8th September

On Friday 8th September we would like you to wear something yellow.  Bring a gold coin to help Forest and Bird try to save the endangered Mohua from predators.

Finished colouring competition pictures need to be dropped into Reception tomorrow morning so that our visitors from Forest and Bird can judge them.  We will be having a special assembly with them later in the day.

Pod 6 Swimming next week (11th - 15th September)

Please remember to send your children along every day next week with their togs and towels.  The children will be travelling to and from the pool via minivans, apart from a few who may travel with the teacher or a parent in cars.

From Monday 18th - 22nd September - Pod 1 are swimming.

NZPF - New Zealand Principals' Conference

Next week I will be attending this conference in Queenstown.  Twenty three of our Year 5 and 6s are performing as part of the UC Kapa Haka group and I can already feel the hairs on my neck rising as they are going to be absolutely AMAZING and I will be sitting in the audience feeling so TUMEKE.  Many thanks to Anne Jenkins who has put so much time, effort, love and absolute passion and leadership in preparing not only our kids but working with the whole UC group to ensure they are well rehearsed and ready to go.  Anne, you are a star!  Many thanks also to the parents who are taking our Year 6 campers to the conference performance on Tuesday and from there down to join their classmates at camp in Dunedin.  And an extra thank you to these wonderful Year 6s in particular who opted to miss a day at camp to take part in our UC group.  You are TUMEKE too!

Creative Arts Soiree

...but it will be the afternoon on Wednesday 20th September - the last week of school this term.
Wow!  It has arrived.  The time when we will share the hard work of our tamariki and our Creatives tutor, Chrissy Wickes and our Creatives lead teacher Kath Nicholson.  Two terms of working on the visual arts as part of our Ko Wai Tātou - Who Are We - throughline for this year.  It has been all about construction with some inside artworks produced and some large outdoor installations as well.  So...we invite you all along to our showcasing of the Creative Arts at Wānaka Primary School at 1.30pm on the 20th September.

The programme is as follows:
Please be seated in the hall by 1.25pm as we will begin sharp at 1.30pm.
1.30pm:  Senior Kapa Haka performance
               Junior Kapa Haka performance
               Band performance
               Sing Squad performance
               Dance performance (seniors)

2.00pm:  The Creatives Projects
Kath will share the scope of this project

2.15pm:  You will be given a 'map' to then move off on your own exploration of our Ko Wai Tātou art installations from each pod.  At each mark on the map you will find some students who will tell you all about the art work you are viewing.

Everyone is welcome to attend our Creative Arts Showcase.  We are so excited to be sharing these with you.

A reminder that the last day of term 3 is Friday 22nd September and the first day of term 4 in Monday 9th October.
