EOTC Timetable for this Thursday

Missed Snow Sports Days

The recent weather for our Thursday 5-day Snow Sports Programme has not been the blue-bird days we'd like.  Because of this we have now missed 2 days that were organised.  This week is our postponement day and all going well would mean we have had 4 days out of 5.

We will be in touch after Thursday with options for the day(s) missed.  We are going to wait until after this Thursday as this could influence the options Cardrona/TC/WPS can offer.  There will not be a 'make-up' day in Week 10.

Tribe Day Bake Sale

This Friday 20th September, there is going to be a Tribe Day Bake Sale.
Each Pod has been hard at work baking all the delicious food that will be sold at the sale, starting at 12.30pm. Children will need to bring money to school if they would like to buy something yummy to eat at lunch.  All items will cost $1.
Don't forget to wear your tribe colours :)

Ministry of Education Statement

Re: Albert Town as an in-zone area for WPS in 2025

'We are pleased to inform you that the Ministry of Education has thoroughly considered all aspects of the proposed changes, including feedback given through the survey.  At this stage, we believe the change is likely to be approved - (this is Wendy's Addition in red - that is the Albert Town area will be part of the Wānaka Primary School zone, and children from Albert Town will thus be considered as in-zone students for Wānaka Primary School as from the beginning of 2025).

Key concerns raised in the consultation included Transport, the Grandparenting clause and housing development areas.  The Ministry are working on addressing the concerns that have been raised before a final amendment to the enrolment scheme is decided.  They expect to reach a decision before the end of Term 3.

We will share this decision with the school community as soon as it is finalised.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.'

Out Of Zone Enrolments

The Wānaka Primary School Board gives notification that the school has 60 available places, across all year levels, and invites applications from parents for out-of-zone enrolments, for next year, 2025.

All out-of-zone enrolments are subject to enrolment scheme legislation.  If the number of out-of-zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot.

The out-of-zone enrolment application deadline is the 27th September 2024.  Information on the out-of-zone application process, together with the enrolment form and an out-of-zone ballot application form (both of which are required to be submitted) are available on our school website.  If a ballot is required this will be held on 11th October 2024.

In-Zone Enrolments

If you are currently in the Wānaka Primary School Zone, (or in the Albert Town area in 2025), or know someone who is applicable for in-zone enrolment and intends to have children starting in 2025, please let the school office know (office@wānakaprimary.school.nz or ring 4437687) that you will be enrolling a child and when that enrolment is to happen.  This is so we can plan our staffing and class organisation for 2025.  This applies to any new 5 year olds for next year as well as other older and younger siblings.  Future out-of-zone enrolment numbers depend on the number we have identified as in-zone, as in-zone have automatic rights to attend.

Some Updates

Brrr...yesterday it was a chilly morning looking at the snow on the hills and driving to school in the mist that was hovering around Wānaka.  But then the sun came out and it felt more like school swimming weather.  Enjoy your week of swimming lessons Pod 3.

The next 2 weeks:
  • Parent Consultation - the Health Curriculum drop-ins were held yesterday 9-10am and 2-3pm
  • The next drop-in is Monday 23rd September 5-6pm

  • Friday 20th September - Tribe Day Bake Sale
  • Monday 23rd September - Pod 4 swimming all week
  • Tuesday 24th September - Year 6 Parent camp meeting at 5pm, Rm 24 Pod 6
  • Thursday 26th - Winning Tribe Mufti Day - Who will it be?
  • Friday 27th - Out of Zone Enrolment applications for 2025 close
  • Last day of Term 3 is Friday 27th with school closing at the usual time of 3pm
  • Term 4 starts Monday 14th October. A reminder also that school is closed on Labour Day, 28th October this year, which is at the beginning of Week 3

MIke King's - I AM HOPE Mental Wellbeing Project

I AM HOPE according to Mike King 'has one goal - positive societal attitudinal change.  We know our youth struggle with distressing self-talk and overthinking, leaving them feeling isolated and alone.  When we show them these thoughts are universal, we can give our kids a better life'.

As the I AM HOPE team are in Wānaka in the first week of Term 4 we have booked them to come and share a session with our children from 1.30 - 2.30pm where they talk about dealing with anxiety (with a focus on environmental anxiety this time I believe) and the recommend books and resources teachers and families can use to support children as they work through any issues they may be grappling with.

Teacher Only Day - Friday 15th November

(postponed from earlier this term as the presenter was unwell)
Our MoE facilitator for our second Te Reo session, who travels up from Invercargill, was unwell when we last scheduled our Teacher Only Day, on 6th September.  The Teacher Only Day has been rescheduled to Friday 15th November (the original Ministry of Education date).  School will be closed for instruction for this Teacher Only day.  Please make alternative arrangements for your children.

2025 Start Dates for Students

The first day for students next year is Monday 3rd February.  Waitangi Day falls on the Thursday of that week (6th February) and school will be open on Friday 7th February to align with MAC.  The Ministry have advised us they will be setting compulsory Teacher Only Days again next year and will also determine when these will be held.  We will advise you of these as they come to hand so you can add them to your 2025 calendar.

Emergency Drills

Last week we practised our Earthquake Drill school wide and other drills will follow as schoolwide practices over the next two weeks.  If a practice drill is happening when you enter school, please follow the instructions from the staff.

PB4L SCHOOL-WIDE GOAL

Positive Behaviour For Learning - PB4L

PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective.  The framework is based on international evidence and is helping New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life.

Each fortnight we focus on a school wide goal to encourage positive behaviours.  The current goal is:  'We are kind, gentle and considerate of others and their property.'

BookHub

BookHub is an relatively new NZ based website where you can search for books you want to buy online from NZ based booksellers rather than from overseas sites.
