BOARD BUZZ

Recapitation Update

I know many of you are aware of the conversation we have been having around bringing the year 7 and 8 back into primary schools in the Upper Clutha.  The Board have been continuing to press the Ministry on this issue and last term we had a meeting with all schools and the Ministry.  The conversation also included growth plans for the area and how we can continue to provide for our children.  There has been a commitment from the Ministry to consult on the issue of recapitation but they do not see it happening for another year or two.  We do not think this is acceptable so will keep putting pressure on to bring this forward.  The Board have raised this issue and its handling to the highest levels of the Ministry to keep presenting the view of the community.

Until this happens though we are required to keep working within the current structure.  The Board is aware of some of the issues around anxiety and transition to high school but the best course of action for parents is to communicate with MAC and ensure they are aware of any concerns and can plan to alleviate those challenges.

I wish we had more news but please be assured, we are continuing to work on it.
CURRICULUM COMMENT

Panto Practice for all on Sunday 14th November

School life has been so busy we are going to have a couple of weekend practices to start to pull our panto together.  We are asking for all panto actors to come from 1pm to 4pm this coming Sunday if they can make it.  We will practice in the hall.  Please send children along with snacks and a bottle of water.  We will have at least one more practice in the upcoming weekends.

Year 6s are busy with camp activities all week

Yesterday the Year 6s headed off for a great day at Te Kakano and Barn Pinch Farm.  They were congratulated on their excellent behaviour during these visits which was very nice to hear.  On Thursday and Friday they are off for lots of outdoor activities and a night camping at Glendhu Bay.

Thanks to the wonderful Year 6 teachers, under the leadership of Anna and Kath who have put a lot of time, effort and energy into planning these days for our Year 6s after being denied their Dunedin camp because of level 2 restrictions.  This whole process has involved so much extra from you - thanks on behalf of all the students, staff and parents.

Swimming

Rooms 2, 3 and 4 are swimming this week, with Rooms 1 and 5 swimming next week.  They are being transported to swimming in our school vans.

Cricket

The last day for cricket coaching is today with the middle and senior school. Our children are fortunate in that this coaching is delivered by Sam from Otago Country Cricket.  Thanks to Hannah for her tireless organisation of such events.

Paralympics

Our PALs, some Y5s and Room 19 are heading to the Recreation Centre next Monday 15th to help with a paralympics competition organised by The Halberg Trust.  The day sounds lots of fun for our students and they will report back in the next newsletter to tell us about the sports they played.
