HRSA Announces Record Health Care Workforce Awards in Rural and Underserved Communities

Today, November 22, Vice President KamalaHarris announced a historic $1.5 billion investment to help grow and diversifythe nations health care workforce andbolster equitable health care in the communities in need during the COVID-19 pandemic andin the years to come.

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan (ARP) funding, the Biden-Harris Administration has awarded the largest field strength in NHSC and Nurse Corps history, with 22,700 doctors, dentists, nurses, and behavioral health providers now serving in communities all across the nation.

Nearly 20,000National Health Service Corps (NHSC)members, more than 2,500Nurse Corpsnurses and approximately 250 awardees under a new program, theSubstance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Loan Repayment Program (STAR LRP), provide vital care to 23.6 million patients in the United States.

NHSC, Nurse Corps, and STAR LRP directly improve the nation's health equity by connecting skilled, committed providers with communities in need of care. Members work in disciplines urgently needed in underserved tribal, rural and urban communities.

ARP funding made it possible for the NHSC to make awards to all eligible applicants. Additional ARP-funded awards are planned, with the NHSC and Nurse Corps loan repayment programs currently accepting applications.
