| Today's Top 10 Stories | | #1 | | Nielsen Reveals Streaming Ratings | | | | Nielsen unveiled its first findings on viewership of TV shows on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, providing data about select programs to media partners at a conference in Las Vegas. Netflix and its competitors have been very secretive about their ratings.
Why This Matters: Nielsen provided viewership numbers for a handful of streaming shows, including the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black. According to the company, 6.7 million people watched the shows season-four premiere from June 17-19. If it were on cable, it would rank second only to HBOs Game of Thrones.

| | #2 | | WRAL Launches ATSC 3.0 4K Signal | | | | WRAL, Capitol Broadcastings NBC affiliate in Raleigh, N.C, announced yesterday that it has launched a new ATSC 3.0 TV station, making it the first commercial TV station to broadcast using the new standard.
Why This Matters: While ATSC 3.0 receivers remain commercially unavailable and the standard itself is not fully finalized, broadcasters consider ATSC 3.0 a necessary advancement for over-the-air television. It is designed to deliver 4K Ultra HD resolution, high dynamic range, and wide color gamut, as well as personalized, object audio and advanced emergency warnings.

| | #3 | | Lionsgate to Acquire Starz for $4.4 Billion | | | | Lionsgate announced that it has agreed to buy Starz for $4.4 billion in cash and stock, creating what the companies called “a global content powerhouse positioned to capitalize on growth opportunities worldwide.” The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
Why This Matters: Starz reaches 24 million U.S. subscribers while the Starz Encore Network has 32 million subscribers and five streaming services. The union will leave Lionsgate with a 16,000-title film and television library with, including 87 original series on 42 U.S. networks.
