Three charged in thwarted Iranian murder-for-hire plot to kill Trump |
The Justice Department has announced charges against an Iranian man and two others living in New York in a plot to kill President-elect Donald Trump, according to a newly unsealed criminal complaint. Farhad Shakeri, one of the men charged, is described in the complaint as an “asset of the Iranian regime,” who remains at large and is believed to reside in Iran. The other two men, Carlisle Rivera and Jonathan Loadholt, were arrested in New York on Thursday, the complaint said. The two made their initial appearance in federal court yesterday and were ordered detained pending trial. The alleged assassination plot was hatched in retaliation for the Trump-authorized killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in 2020, according to federal prosecutors. Trump’s transition team said in a statement that the president-elect “is aware” of the plot, and that “nothing will deter” him from “restoring peace around the world,” when he returns to the White House. |

Judge pauses Trump’s election interference case with transition already underway |
The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s federal election interference case has granted a request from special counsel Jack Smith to pause all filing deadlines in the case, a move that likely marks the end of Smith’s prosecution. NBC News previously reported that Justice Department officials were evaluating how to wind down the two federal criminal cases against Trump after his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, in compliance with long-standing department policy that a sitting president cannot be prosecuted. Trump expanded his election win overnight when Nevada was called in his favor. When the Arizona race is finally called, it’s likely that Trump will have swept all seven battleground states. The Trump transition is already underway, with the president-elect naming his campaign manager Susie Wiles as the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff. |
Wildfires rages in New Jersey, state of emergency declared in California |
Large wildfires are burning on both coasts amid historic drought conditions in the Northeast, and a powerful Santa Ana wind event in California. Nearly a half-dozen wildfires are burning in New Jersey and there are red flag warnings across the tri-state area after weeks of dry weather. New York City emergency officials warned residents today that they may smell smoke from the fires burning just across the Hudson River. On the other side of the country, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency over an explosive wildfire that has now destroyed at least 130 homes in Ventura County. The Mountain Fire has grown to more than 20,000 acres with just 7% containment, according to CalFire. |
“Historic” winter storm threatens to bring several feet of snow to Rockies |
Winter storm warnings have been issued in Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, with the National Weather Service warning of "historic" snowfall that is making travel impossible in some areas. Up to three feet of snow could fall outside Denver, and the wintry conditions have already complicated efforts to rescue stranded motorists. The NWS is warning of major travel headaches. “Impossible travel east and southeast of Denver!” forecasters said on social media. “If you venture there, be prepared to be stuck for a very, very long time!!” The weather is also causing problems in the skies, with hundreds of flights canceled or delayed at the Denver airport. |
Israeli soccer fans injured in antisemitic attacks in Amsterdam, police say |
Five people were hospitalized after attacks targeting Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam that both Israeli and Dutch leaders have condemned as antisemitic. Police in Amsterdam said 62 people were arrested in the violence surrounding a soccer game between an Israeli team and a Dutch club. Disturbing videos on social media show victims being beaten in the streets as shouts of “Free Palestine” can be heard. Amsterdam’s mayor has banned protests for three days after the attacks by what she called “antisemitic hit-and-run squads,” and Israel has sent planes to bring fans homes. |
