Kentucky flood death toll rises to 35 with more rain on the way |

|
---|
The death toll from the flooding disaster still unfolding in eastern Kentucky has risen to at least 35, Gov. Andy Beshear announced today. |
---|
|
---|
Beshear has said the toll is expected to climb even further, with hundreds of people still unaccounted for. The search and rescue effort is ongoing, with authorities saying some residents may still be trapped, or lack cell phone service. |
---|
|
---|
The National Guard has carried out more than 1,000 airlift rescues since the flooding began, Beshear said Sunday. |
---|
|
---|
Among the dead are four children from the same family, ages 2, 4, 6, and 8. Their cousin said on Facebook that all four siblings had drowned, but their parents had survived. |
---|
|
---|
Rounds of additional showers and storms are expected in the region later tonight and could cause even more flooding. Flood Watches have been extended across eastern Kentucky and West Virginia through Tuesday morning. |

California’s largest wildfire of the year turns deadly |

|

An out-of-control wildfire in Northern California, that’s become the state’s largest inferno of the year, has taken a deadly turn, after thousands of residents were forced to evacuate. |

The McKinney Fire has grown to more than 55,000 acres, and is zero percent contained, according to fire officials. A NOAA satellite captured the fire’s explosive growth over the weekend. |

Senate Democrats plan new vote on burn pits bill for veterans |
---|
|
---|
A group of veterans and advocates has been protesting on the Capitol steps for days after Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would expand medical coverage for millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan. |
---|
|
---|
Senate Democrats are planning to hold a new vote on the bill this week after 25 GOP senators, who previously supported the bipartisan PACT Act, reversed their stance on Wednesday. |
---|
|
---|
Republicans like Sens. Pat Toomey and Ted Cruz have accused Democrats of playing budgetary tricks with how the funds would be allocated and managed. Cruz accused Democrats of altering the bill to include “pork” spending that will “supercharge inflation.” |
---|
|
---|
Jon Stewart, who has fiercely advocating for the bill’s passage, took Cruz to task over the weekend for his opposition to the measure. |
---|
|
---|
“What he is saying it just factually incorrect,” Stewart told NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “The bill that Ted Cruz voted ‘yes’ on had the exact same funding provisions as the bill he voted ‘no’ on. It’s the exact same bill.” |

NFL star Deshaun Watson suspended after sexual misconduct allegations |
---|
|
---|
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has been suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. |
---|
|
---|
The decision was issued by a retired federal judge, who presided over a three-day league hearing concerning allegations against Watson. |
---|
|
---|
Watson has been accused of sexual misconduct by 24 women, and he has now settled civil lawsuits with all but one of them, according to a lawyer representing the plaintiffs. |
---|
|
---|
The NFL or the players association may appeal the decision within three days. The league said in a statement that it’s reviewing the ruling, and “will make a determination on next steps.” |
---|
|
---|
Watson’s lawyer and representatives of the Browns and the players association could not immediately be reached for comment. |
