Dozens of babies from Gaza evacuated to Egypt, Biden believes hostage deal close

At least 28 of the 31 premature babies who were evacuated from Gaza’s largest hospital have been taken across the border to Egypt to continue receiving medical care, health workers said.

The plight of the tiny babies at the Al-Shifa hospital has drawn global attention. A number of babies at the medical facility died as conditions deteriorated inside, health officials in the Hamas-run territory have said.

Israel has released video that it says shows hostages being taken to the Al-Shifa hospital, and a tunnel underneath the complex, citing the clips as evidence that Hamas was using the hospital as a command center.

Heavy fighting has now broken out around another medical facility in northern Gaza, the Indonesian Hospital, eyewitnesses said. Hamas said at least 12 people have been killed there.

Negotiators are closing in on a deal to release some of the estimated 240 hostages Hamas is holding in exchange for a pause in fighting, sources familiar with the negotiations told NBC News, though they say nothing has been finalized yet.

President Joe Biden, during today's White House turkey pardoning ceremony, was asked by a reporter if a deal is near to release hostages. “I believe so,” he said.

Cross-country storm threatens to snarl Thanksgiving travel

Al Roker is tracking a large and potent storm moving across the country and threatening to cause travel nightmares during one of the busiest weeks of the year.

The system is already producing inclement weather and causing travel concerns from the Southern Plains to the Midwest.

Tomorrow, the system will spread rain from the Midwest to the lower Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, then quickly move into the Northeast by Tuesday night.

By Wednesday, the storm will pull away from the East Coast, but northern New England and Maine will still see rain and snow through the evening. 

Rain and snow will end by Thanksgiving morning, but cool and blustery conditions are expected across the Northeast through the holiday.

Tributes pour in for former First Lady Rosalynn Carter

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter is being remembering today as a champion for humanitarian efforts and mental health care, a day after she died at her home in Plains, Georgia at age 96, according to the Carter Center.

Her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, said in a statement, “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished.” He added, “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

President Biden wrote on social media that Rosalynn Carter “walked her own path, inspiring a nation and the world along the way.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama wrote, “She reminded me to make the role of First Lady my own, just like she did. I’ll always remain grateful for her support and her generosity.”

Former President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump said they are mourning the loss of the “devoted First Lady, a great humanitarian, a champion for mental health, and a beloved wife to her husband for 77 years, President Carter.”

Rosalynn Carter will lie in repose at the Carter Center next week and will be buried in a private ceremony at her home, her foundation said.

OpenAI employees threaten to quit after ousted CEO joins Microsoft

Hundreds of employees who work for OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, have signed a letter threatening to quit unless the company’s board resigns and ousted CEO Sam Altman is reinstated.

“Your actions have made it obvious that you are incapable of overseeing OpenAI,” the letter to the board reads.

In a surprise move, the board forced Altman out on Friday, saying it “no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.”

Altman has now joined Microsoft, where he will lead a new advanced AI research team, the company announced today.

The employees who signed the letter to OpenAI’s board said they are considering joining Microsoft’s new AI subsidiary under Altman.
