Baltimore bridge collapses after ship collision, six unaccounted for |
A urgent search and rescue effort is underway in the Baltimore harbor, where a major bridge collapsed after it was hit by a massive cargo ship that had lost power, sending several vehicles plunging into the water, officials said. Dramatic video captured the moment the 948-foot Dali container ship rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, sending the structure tumbling into the water in pieces. Emergency crews are searching for at least six people believed to have fallen into the water, after two others were rescued, fire officials said. Authorities believe all eight people were part of a construction crew that was on the bridge fixing potholes. Before the crash, the ship sent a mayday, giving officials time to stop the flow of traffic on the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said at a news conference. President Joe Biden called the incident a “terrible accident” and said he intends for the federal government to pay the entire cost of rebuilding the bridge. Supreme Court hears arguments in high-stakes abortion pill case |
The Supreme Court heard a major case today that could restrict access to the abortion pill, including its availability by mail. A majority of the justices appeared skeptical about whether the plaintiffs, a group of anti-abortion doctors and activists, had the right to challenge the FDA’s approval process for the medication. The case involves mifepristone, the drug that was used in nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the U.S. last year. The FDA first approved mifepristone in 2000, and expanded access to it in 2016, and again in 2021. The plaintiffs argue the FDA exceeded its authority when the agency made the pill more widely available. |
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ phones seized as feds raided homes |
Homeland Security officials seized phones from Sean "Diddy" Combs as federal agents raided his homes in Los Angeles and Miami, according to three law enforcement sources familiar with the warrant. Combs was in Miami and set to fly to the Bahamas, according to the sources. It’s unclear if he left on the trip as planned. Video obtained by TMZ appears to show Combs pacing outside the Miami airport after the raids. Combs is the subject of a federal investigation amid multiple lawsuits accusing the rapper and producer of sex trafficking and other abuses, a source familiar with the matter told NBC News on Monday. Combs has denied any wrongdoing. |
Russia extends U.S. reporter Evan Gershkovich’s detention through June |
A Russian court has extended the pretrial detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich by three months until June 30. Gershkovich, who was arrested on espionage charges in Russia in late March 2023 while on a reporting trip, has already spent nearly a year in jail without being convicted of a crime. Gershkovich and the WSJ have vehemently denied the espionage allegations, and the U.S. has declared him wrongfully detained. |
