Good Wednesday afternoon. Here is what’s in our Nightly Rundown. |

Biden and Harris make first joint appearance as running mates |
---|
|
---|
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are appearing together for the first time as running mates in Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Delaware this afternoon. |
---|
|
---|
“Together, Kamala and I are going to fight every single day in the White House to make sure that promise is fulfilled for all Americans,” Biden tweeted today. |
---|
|
---|
The campaign has also rolled out its first ad touting the selection of Harris. |
---|
|
---|
If elected, Harris would make history as the first female, first Black American, and first Asian-American to serve as vice president. |
---|
|
---|
Biden announced Harris as his running mate on Tuesday, about 90 minutes after he had called to inform her of his decision, a campaign aide told NBC News. |
---|
|
---|
Harris tweeted that she was “honored” to join Biden on the ticket, and pledged to “do what it takes to make him our Commander-in-Chief.” |
---|
|
---|
The new running mates were one-time rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination. |
---|
|
---|
Harris mounted a scathing attack on Biden’s civil rights record in the very first 2020 debates, hosted by NBC News last summer. |
---|
|
---|
Harris is the only Black woman in the Senate. She was elected in 2016 after serving as California’s attorney general. Before that, she was a district attorney for San Francisco. |
---|

Andrea Mitchell is reporting tonight on Biden and Harris joining forces, and Lester Holt will have a profile of the new vice presidential candidate. |

Biden selects Kamala Harris as running mate |
---|
| |
---|
Trump says Harris is “the kind of opponent everyone dreams of!” |
---|
|
---|
President Trump and his allies wasted little time in going on the attack against Kamala Harris, after she was announced as Joe Biden’s running mate. |
---|
|
---|
Trump tweeted today that Harris “started strong in the Democrat Primaries, and finished weak, ultimately fleeing the race with almost zero support. That’s the kind of opponent everyone dreams of!” |
---|
|
---|
At Tuesday’s White House news conference, Trump said he was “a little surprised” Biden had selected Harris, saying she was “very nasty” and “disrespectful” to Biden during the debates. |
---|
|
---|
The Trump campaign is seeking to portray Harris as a “phony” who will use her place on the Democratic ticket to advance a “radical left” agenda. |
---|
|
---|
Kristen Welker will have more on the Trump team's reaction to Harris' selection tonight. |

Etowah High School, one of six high schools in the district, has now been shut down until at least Aug. 31, Hightower announced on Tuesday. |
---|
|
---|
Elsewhere around the country, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced today that schools can opt for all-remote learning this fall. |
---|
|
---|
Tom Costello will have much more tonight in our series Coronavirus and the Classroom. |
