Biden sets Jan. 4 deadline for employer vaccine mandate |
---|
|
---|
Workers at companies with 100 or more employees must be fully vaccinated against Covid by Jan. 4 or face weekly testing, the Biden administration announced today. |
---|
|
---|
The new requirements cover an estimated 84 million American workers. Any employer failing to comply will be fined up to $14,000, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. |
---|
|
---|
A number of U.S. companies have already enacted their own mandates. Ford Motor company announced today it will require most of its 32,000 U.S. salaried workers to be vaccinated by Dec. 8. |
---|
|
---|
Mandates remain a flashpoint across the nation. About five percent of unvaccinated adults say they’ve left their jobs due to a mandate, according to a survey released last week. |
---|
|
---|
In New York City, Mayor-elect Eric Adams said he wants to “revisit” the city’s mandate for public workers, which has been met with union backlash and some protests. |

Democrat Phil Murphy ekes out win in New Jersey governor’s race |
---|
|
---|
Murphy defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli to become the state’s first Democratic governor to be re-elected in more than 40 years. |
---|
|
---|
But the race was unexpectedly close in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 1 million registered voters, and where Biden won by 16 points in 2020. |
---|
|
---|
Tuesday’s election results raised major red flags for Democrats heading into the 2022 midterms, with their razor-thin control of Congress at stake. |

One Black juror selected in Ahmaud Arbery killing trial |
---|
|
---|
The jury includes 11 white people and one Black person, selected from a pool in Glynn County, where more than a quarter of residents are Black. |
---|
|
---|
Prosecutors challenged the defense’s decision to strike eight Black potential jurors, arguing they were cut because of their race. |
---|
|
---|
An attorney for one of the defendants said the “issue of race” was not a factor in their selection process. |
---|
|
---|
Judge Timothy Walmsley acknowledged that the defense appeared to engage in “intentional discrimination,” but said state law wouldn’t allow him to intervene. |
---|
|
---|
Opening statements are expected to begin on Friday. |

Dwayne Johnson bans guns on set after “Rust” tragedy |
---|
|
---|
Hollywood superstar Dwayne Johnson says he will only use rubber guns after the shooting death on the set of the Alec Baldwin movie “Rust” last month. |
---|
|
---|
“Any movie, any television show, or anything we do or produce — we won’t use real guns at all,” Johnson told Variety on Wednesday. |
---|
|
---|
Johnson said he was “heartbroken” after learning cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed by a prop gun fired by Baldwin. |
---|
|
---|
“We’re going to switch over to rubber guns, and we’re going to take care of it in post[-production],” said Johnson, star of some of the biggest action movies of the last decade. |
---|
|
---|
“We’re not going to worry about the dollars; we won’t worry about what it costs.” |
