| Good Monday afternoon. Democrats are celebrating their Senate breakthrough on a major economic and climate bill, police are investigating a possible serial killer in New Mexico, and the family of Gabby Petito has filed a $50 million lawsuit against Utah police. |

Biden says economic and climate bill “changes people lives” |
|---|
|
|---|
| President Joe Biden hailed the sweeping economic, climate, and health care bill narrowly passed by the Senate over the weekend as a game-changer for Americans. |

|
|---|
| “It changes people’s lives,” Biden told reporters at Dover Air Force Base, as he left to tour the damage from the recent flood disaster in Kentucky. |
|---|
|
|---|
| The bill, called the Inflation Reduction Act, includes $430 billion to combat climate change and expand health care coverage, as well as tax reforms and a provision that would allow Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices with the pharmaceutical industry. |

|
|---|
| The bill now goes to the House, where Democrats are expected to pass it when they return from summer recess on Friday. It would then go to Biden’s desk for his signature. |

Possible serial killer targeting Muslim men in New Mexico |

| Investigators have released images of a vehicle of interest in the case, a metallic charcoal or dark gray late-model Volkswagen Jetta from central New Mexico. |

|
|---|
| Police say that the attacks, dating back to November, may be related and that the victims were mostly likely targeted. They have not said whether the attacks were motivated by hate. |

|

| President Biden tweeted that he is “angered and saddened” by the killings. “These hateful attacks have no place in America,” he wrote. |

| At least 37 people were killed in the flash flood catastrophe, after storms dropped 8 to 10.5 inches of rain in 48 hours late last month. More rain is expected in the region this week, according to the National Weather Service. |

| Elsewhere across the country, storms in Denver caused major street flooding overnight, prompting firefighters to rescue at least 29 people from their cars. |

|
|---|
| Extreme heat has 55 million people on alert in the Northeast, the central and lower Mississippi Valley and the Northwest. |

|
|---|
| In the Northeast, hot temperatures combined with high humidity will make it feel like 95 to 105 degrees today and tomorrow in cities such as Philadelphia, New York, Boston. |

Ahmaud Arbery’s killers sentenced to life in prison for hate crimes |

| The father and son convicted in the 2020 murder of Ahmaud Arbery were sentenced to life in prison for committing a federal hate crime. |

| The judge also ruled that Travis McMichael, and his father Greg McMichael, must serve their sentences in state prison, not federal prison as their attorneys had requested. |

|
|---|
| A third man involved in the attack, William “Roddie” Bryan, is also scheduled to be sentenced today. |

|
|---|
| The McMichaels and Bryan chased Arbery through their Georgia neighborhood in their trucks in February 2020. Travis McMichael fatally shot Arbery with a shotgun. |

|
|---|
| The McMichaels later told police they suspected Arbery was a burglar, but investigators found he had committed no crimes. |
|---|
|
|---|
| The McMichaels and Bryan were previously sentenced to life in prison in January after they were convicted on state murder charges. |
