Catastrophic wildfires leave at least two dead, destroy 1,000 structures in Los Angeles area |
The unprecedented, out-of-control wildfires fueled by hurricane-force winds in the Los Angeles area have left at least two people dead and destroyed an estimated 1,000 structures, fire officials said today. A state of emergency has been declared amid the apocalyptic scenes of firefighters battling on the front lines and residents racing to get out, with more than 80,000 people forced to evacuate. The Eaton Fire, which is blamed for the two deaths, has burned more than 10,000 acres and 0% contained, according to officials. Our Liz Kreutz has new video from Malibu of homes in flames from the Palisades Fire, which has burned nearly 12,000 acres and is also 0% contained. Several celebrities were among those evacuated or impacted by the fires, with Chris Pratt and Mark Hamill sharing posts, and “Police Academy” star Steve Guttenberg jumping in to help firefighters by moving abandoned vehicles. |

Trump asks Supreme Court to block sentencing in hush money case |
President-elect Donald Trump is traveling this afternoon to Washington, D.C., where he will meet with Senate Republicans, after two significant developments in his legal cases. Trump has asked the Supreme Court to halt the sentencing scheduled for Friday in his New York hush money case. Trump’s attorneys argue he is protected by presidential immunity as recognized by the Supreme Court last year. Also today, Attorney General Merrick Garland is planning to partially release Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report on his investigation into Trump, if a federal appeals court vacates an injunction by a Trump-appointed judge, the Justice Department said in a court filing. |
