First case of coronavirus in U.S. with “unknown” source |
---|
|
---|
Our team is fanned out across the globe. Miguel Almaguer is in California, where the new case was diagnosed, Hallie Jackson is at the White House reporting on President Trump’s new task force, and Kelly Cobiella is in South Korea, where the number of cases has exploded. |

|
---|
The new patient: The latest case involves a woman near Sacramento, bringing the total number within the U.S. to 60. The patient was forced to wait days for testing because she did not initially fit the CDC’s criteria for COVID-19, according to the CEO of UC Davis Health. The CDC did confirm the case on Wednesday, saying it “was detected through the U.S. public health system — picked up by astute clinicians.”Global spread: The coronavirus has now been detected in at least 47 countries, with upwards of 82,000 cases and more than 2,800 people dead worldwide. Nations are resorting to extreme measures in the hopes of stopping the spread. The U.S. is postponing military exercises with South Korea, where cases grew today by more than 500, while Japan is asking all schools to close for about a month. In Italy, the country with the most cases in Europe, the death toll rose to 17 today, officials said. In the U.K., some students who attend the same private school as Prince George and Princess Charlotte are staying home after they were tested for the virus.Market meltdown: The Dow fell for the sixth straight day, dropping nearly 1,200 points, amid the sell-off over coronavirus fears. The slide marks the worst week for Wall Street since the financial crisis.Coronavirus task force: Vice President Mike Pence said today that the coronavirus risk to the public “remains low” but “we’re ready,” while speaking at the CPAC conference. Trump on Wednesday put Pence in charge of a task force that will manage the U.S. response, which has been blasted as inadequate so far by critics. The White House announced today that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, Surgeon General Jerome Adams, and White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow would be joining the task force. Kudlow downplayed the threat in the U.S. earlier in the week. “We have contained this,” he told CNBC on Tuesday. “I won’t say airtight but pretty close to airtight.” |

Police search for answers in deadly Milwaukee brewery mass shooting |
---|
|
---|
The gunman who carried out the deadly mass shooting at one of the nation’s largest breweries in Milwaukee was 51-year-old Anthony Ferrill, NBC News had confirmed. Kathy Park is reporting on the rampage that left five employees dead. |
---|
|
---|
Ferrill was “an active brewery employee” at the Molson Coors complex, the company said in a statement. Police said he was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. No motive has been given for the shooting, and the names of the victims have not yet been made public. |

|
---|
“This is a tragic day for our city, this is a tragic day for our state,” Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said at a news conference on Wednesday evening. |

Biden holds massive lead in latest South Carolina poll |
---|
|
---|
We’re less than 48 hours away from the polls opening in the South Carolina primary, and Joe Biden is out to a big lead in the state over national frontrunner Bernie Sanders, according to the newest poll. |
---|
|
---|
Biden holds a 20-point advantage, leading Sanders 36 percent to 16 percent in South Carolina, in the latest Monmouth University poll released today. In third place is Tom Steyer with 15 percent, followed by Elizabeth Warren (8 percent), Pete Buttigieg (6 percent) and Amy Klobuchar (4 percent). |
---|
|
---|
Michael Bloomberg is not on the ballot in South Carolina, but the Monmouth poll shows 1 in 4 likely primary voters say they would be either very (9%) or somewhat (16%) likely to vote for him. |
---|
|
---|
Biden has wide support (45 percent) among black voters, who make up the majority of Democratic primary voters in South Carolina. The next closest competitor is Steyer, with 17 percent of support from black voters. |
---|
|
---|
Kristen Welker is on the campaign trail tonight, and will have an interview with Buttigieg, who is in the fight for his political life going into Saturday’s primary and Super Tuesday on March 3. |

Pedestrian deaths surge to record 30-year high in U.S. |
---|
|
---|
The report, from the Governors Highway Safety Association, found 6,590 pedestrians were killed on U.S. roads in 2019, a 5 percent increase over 2018 — and the highest number in more than 30 years. |
---|
|
---|
What’s to blame for the surge? Distraction from the “tremendous growth of smartphone use” is among the factors cited in the report. Other contributing factors include an increase in SUVs on the road, unsafe driving behaviors, and the need for safer road crossings, the report said. |

18,000 students pack Madison Square Garden for ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ |
---|
|
---|
It was a history-making moment at Madison Square Garden. The cast of “To Kill a Mockingbird” took the show on the road for a one-time-only performance at the famous venue. It was the first time MSG has ever hosted a Broadway play, and it was to a very special audience: 18,000 New York City public school students. |
---|
|
---|
“For many of them, this is going to be their first time seeing a play,” said Aaron Sorkin, who adapted the classic novel for the stage. “I hope they leave wanting more: wanting more of this feeling, more of this experience, more theater.” |
