Rabbi describes escape from “terrifying” hostage standoff |

The rabbi of a Texas synagogue said he threw a chair at a gunman holding him and two other people hostage, and led the escape from the 10-hour standoff at a synagogue on Saturday. |

“I threw a chair at the gunman, and I headed for the door, and all three of us were able to get out without even a shot being fired,” Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker said in an interview with CBS. |

---|
"It was terrifying. It was overwhelming, and we're still processing," Cytron-Walker said. |

|
---|
One of the other hostages shared his ordeal on Facebook. “First of all, we escaped. We weren't released or freed,” Jeffrey R. Cohen wrote. |

The hostage-taker, identified as British citizen Malik Faisal Akram, 44, died during the standoff. |

|
---|
The FBI called the standoff “a terrorism-related matter, in which the Jewish community was targeted” and said the Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating, in a statement on Sunday. |

China halts Olympic tickets sales as Omicron reported in Beijing |

Organizers for the Beijing Olympics have announced that tickets will not be sold to the general public, citing the ongoing Covid pandemic. |

Instead, only invited “groups of spectators” will be permitted to attend events, the International Olympic Committee said. China had previously barred foreign spectators from attending. |

The Olympic Winter Games will be held Feb. 4-20, and the Paralympic Winter Games happen March 4-13. |

Biden evokes Martin Luther King Jr. in voting rights push |

The White House has put pressure on Congress to pass two bills, the Freedom To Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. |

But last week, moderate Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema appeared to deal a fatal blow to those hopes, when they said they would not support eliminating the Senate filibuster pass the bills over Republican opposition. |
