Donald Sutherland, “M*A*S*H,” and “Hunger Games” star, dies at 88 |
Donald Sutherland, the celebrated actor who starred in classic films such as “M*A*S*H,” “Ordinary People,” and more recently “The Hunger Games” franchise, has died at 88, his son announced today. Kiefer Sutherland paid tribute to his father on social media, calling him “one of the most important actors in the history of film.” “Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly,” he wrote. “He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.” Born in Canada, Donald Sutherland rose to fame in “The Dirty Dozen” and “M*A*S*H,” and went on to a wide range of roles over his six-decade career in films such as “Klute,” “Kelly’s Heroes,” “Don’t Look Now,” “Ordinary People,” and “JFK.” In recent years, he played the villainous President Snow in “The Hunger Games” series. |
Tropical Storm Alberto turns deadly, brings flooding to Texas |
Tropical Storm Alberto made landfall today in Mexico, leaving at least three people dead and bringing flooding to the South Texas coast. The season’s first named storm, now a tropical depression, left much of the city of Surfside Beach underwater on Wednesday. The storm comes amid the brutal heat wave stretching from the Midwest to the Northeast, with 65 million people under alerts. Today also marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. In New Mexico, a second death has been confirmed as two wildfires rage out of control. The fires have forced thousands to evacuate and destroyed around 1,400 structures. And a massive dust storm contributed to a 23-car pileup on Interstate 25 in northern New Mexico that left 18 people hospitalized on Wednesday, authorities said. |
No charges for USC student in fatal stabbing of suspected car burglar |
A University of Southern California student will not face charges in the fatal stabbing of a man suspected of breaking into cars along the school’s Greek Row earlier this week, prosecutors said today. “After careful consideration and a thorough review of all available evidence, we have decided not to pursue charges against USC student Ivan Gallegos,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. Gascón added that his office believes that Gallegos’ actions “were driven by a genuine fear for his life and the lives of others.” Gallegos, 19, was arrested Monday night on suspicion of murder in the death of Xavier Cerf, whom investigators said appeared to be homeless. The LAPD said Gallegos confronted and stabbed Cerf after seeing him breaking into cars. Gallegos told officers the suspected burglar said he had a gun, according to police, but law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times no gun was recovered at the scene. |

Stacy Lee Drake “was located and arrested this morning in Arkansas by the Morrilton Police Department and Arkansas State Police,” according to a statement by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Arkansas State Police had issued a warning on Wednesday for residents to be on the lookout for Drake after he was spotted in Morrilton, a city about 50 miles northwest of Little Rock. |
Biden heads to Camp David to prep for debate against Trump |
With the first presidential debate just a week away, President Joe Biden is scheduled to travel to Camp David this evening to prepare for his showdown with former President Donald Trump. Trump has not been doing traditional debate prep, preferring to hold private meetings with advisers and congressional allies ahead of next week’s event, according to reports. It was revealed today that a coin flip determined Biden will be at the right podium and Trump at the left, and that Trump will give his closing statement last. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as an independent, failed to qualify for the June 27 debate after falling short of polling and ballot requirements. |
