U.S. charges Chinese military hackers with massive Equifax breach

Four Chinese military hackers have been charged with the cyberattack on credit-reporting giant Equifaxand stealing personal information of nearly half of all Americans, the Justice Department said. Tom Costello is on the story for us tonight.
The 2017 data breach — one of the biggest in history — compromised the names, birthdays and social security information of nearly 150 million Americans.
“This was a deliberate and sweeping intrusion into the private information of the American people,” said Attorney General William Barr, as he announced the nine-count indictment.
The four defendants Wu Zhiyong, Wang Qian, Xu Ke and Liu Lei were members of Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s 54th Research Institute, a component of the Chinese military, according to the indictment. They face counts including computer fraud conspiracy, economic espionage, and wire fraud.

Walmart shootout leaves two officers injured in Arkansas

Two officers were injured and a suspect was killed when a shootout erupted inside a Walmart in Forrest City, Arkansas.
Police say the officers were responding to a report of a person acting erratically and threatening others at the store. When the officers confronted the suspect, he pulled out a handgun and fired at them, according to authorities.
During the exchange of gunfire, both officers were struck multiple times, and the suspect was killed. One officer was airlifted to the hospital, but the extent of the injuries is not known.
Tonight, Gabe Gutierrez will report on this latest incident involving violence against police, and have the new developments on the suspected gunman arrested for two attacks on police officers in New York City in just 12 hours.

Coronavirus kills nearly 100 people in deadliest day of outbreak

The coronavirus resulted in the deaths of at least 97 people in China on Sunday, making it the deadliest single day of the outbreak so far. Janis Mackey Frayer is on the ground for us in Beijing tonight.
  • Rare appearance: Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has largely been absent from view during the outbreak, made a rare public appearance today in Beijing. Wearing a facemask, Xi visited a number of sites including a hospital and a community center, and had his temperature taken, images from state-run media show.
  • Back to work: Xi’s appearance came as millions were supposed to return to work after an extended Lunar New Year celebration, but many workplaces remained closed as employees remained nervous of commuting into large towns and cities.
  • Cruise ship nightmare: The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus aboard a Diamond Princess Cruise ship that’s been quarantined near Tokyo has nearly doubled to 135. 11 more Americans are among the new cases, bringing the number of U.S. citizens who have fallen ill on the ship to at least 24.
  • Rising toll: More than 40,000 cases have been confirmed in mainland China, where 908 people have died. The death toll in China alone is now higher than the 774 people who died globally in the SARS outbreak in 2002-2003. Among the dead in Wuhan, China is a 60-year-old U.S. citizen, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Beijing said. It’s believed to be the first American death from the coronavirus.

Sanders, Buttigieg challenge Iowa results on the eve of New Hampshire primary

We’re just a matter of hours away from polls opening in New Hampshire for tomorrow’s first-in-the-nation primary, but the Democratic presidential candidates are still duking it out over who won Iowa. Kristen Welker is on the campaign trail tonight.
Bernie Sanders’ has campaign officially filed for a partial recanvass of the results of Iowa’s chaotic caucuses, after the Iowa Democratic Party allocated Pete Buttigieg the largest number of delegates, 14, with Sanders allocated 12 delegates.
The Sanders campaign is asking for a recanvass of 25 precincts and three satellite caucuses, after glitches with a new app used by the precincts caused a signification delay in reporting the results.
After the filing by the Sanders campaign, the Buttigieg campaign also requested a recanvass of 66 precincts and all in-state satellite precincts, the Iowa Democratic Party said.
With Iowa still in dispute, the candidates are out in force today making their final pitches to voters in New Hampshire — but it’s not just Democrats. President Trump will also be in the Granite State tonight, holding a rally in Manchester that he hopes will “shake up the Dems a little bit.”
