Lester Holt anchors live from Minneapolis for the memorial for George Floyd – the black man who died under the knee of a white police officer. Holt has spent today speaking with protesters and mourners, many of whom are divided on whether or not Floyd’s death will make a difference in the fight for equality. |

---|
Community activist Kandace Montgomery said she’s not so sure, telling Holt, “We need to move beyond police reform and completely transition away from our policing system right now and that is exactly what justice will look like.” |

Beyond Minnesota, Floyd was remembered by Senate Democrats who observed nearly nine minutes of silence, just slightly longer than the amount of time Chauvin held Floyd down. The Senators also recognized Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, whose recent deaths contributed to the nationwide outrage. Senate Chaplain Barry Black led a prayer saying, “We come today to stand in solidarity with courageous Americans who are peacefully protesting against racial injustice.” |

Trump hits back at Mattis criticism that he is not trying to unite Americans |
---|
|
---|
In an op-ed in The Atlantic, the retired Marine general writes, “Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people – does not even pretend to try. The president responded on Twitter, saying of Mattis, “His primary strength was not military, but rather personal public relations. I gave him a new life, things to do, and battles to win, but he seldom ‘brought home the bacon’. “ |
