White House on defense after Trump refused to condemn white supremacists |
---|
|
---|
The White House is defending President Trump after he denied knowledge on Wednesday of the Proud Boys, a far-right group whom he told to “stand back and stand by” during Tuesday’s debate |
---|
|
---|
The White House today maintained two seemingly contradictory claims: that Trump did, in fact, condemn the Proud Boys at the debate — while not knowing at the time who they were. |
---|
|
---|
“The president did denounce them,” press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said at the White House briefing today. Then, seconds later, McEnany said, “He didn’t know who the Proud Boys were.” |
---|
|
---|
Hours after the debate, Trump told reporters on Wednesday, “I don’t know who the Proud Boys are.” He added, “I can only say they have to stand down, let law enforcement do their work.” |
---|
|
---|
Trump has denounced white supremacists before, but under heavy pressure and often in equivocating terms, like his “very fine people on both sides” remark after Charlottesville. |
---|
|
---|
Some of Trump’s allies fear he wasted a chance to shift the race, with most national polls showing him trailing Joe Biden, just over a month until the Nov. 3 election. |
---|
|
---|
The mood around the White House after the debate was “worried,” “quiet” and “in shock,” people familiar with the situation said. |

Trump does not want to change the debate rules |
---|
|
---|
“Why would I allow the Debate Commission to change the rules for the second and third Debates when I easily won last time?” he tweeted this afternoon. |
---|
|
---|
Earlier, Trump claimed to have “won the debate big, based on compilation of polls.” |
---|
|
---|
But three instant polls taken after the debate had Biden coming out on top. |
---|
|
---|
Among the changes the CPD is considering is shutting off a candidate’s microphone when rules are violated, a source close to the commission said. |

Airlines to cut tens of thousands of jobs after no relief deal reached |
---|
|
---|
American Airlines and United Airlines will begin laying off thousands of employees after the deadline to extend federal aid expired today. |
---|
|
---|
The furloughs add up to about 19,000 employees at American, and roughly 13,000 at United, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to crush the travel industry. |
---|
|
---|
Delta Air Lines has said it will delay a decision on furloughs until Nov. 1, and Southwest Airlines has said it will not furlough workers this year. |
---|
|
---|
The House delayed a vote yesterday on Democrats’ $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief package, which includes money for the airlines, to give Speaker Nancy Pelosi more time to negotiate a deal with the White House that could have bipartisan support. |
---|
|
---|
The Democrats’ plan would also restore the extra $600 a week in unemployment benefits for Americans that run out in July. |
---|
|
---|
Last week, another 837,000 initial jobless claims were filed. About 12 million people are still filing weekly for ongoing benefits. |
