Harris calls Trump to concede race, will address nation this afternoon |
Vice President Kamala Harris called President-elect Donald Trump today to congratulate him on winning the 2024 election, her campaign said. On the call, Harris told Trump she would work with President Joe Biden to “ensure a peaceful transfer of power, unlike what we saw in 2020” and “made clear that she hopes he will be a President for all Americans,” Harris campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon said in an email to staffers. Trump acknowledged Harris’ “strength, professionalism, and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of unifying the country,” Steven Cheung, the Trump campaign’s spokesman, said in a statement. Two other aides said Harris spent the morning and afternoon working on her concession speech that she is expected to deliver from her alma mater Howard University at 4 p.m. ET. The vice president underperformed across the country, falling short in several of the battleground states that Biden won in 2020. Harris also lost significant ground with Latinos and young voters, according to the exit polls. Here are five key takeaways from Election Night. |
Donald Trump elected president in historic political comeback |
Donald Trump has been elected the 47th president of the United States, capping off a stunning political comeback following his loss in 2020, the January 6th attack on the Capitol by his supporters, a criminal conviction, and two assassination attempts, to defeat Vice President Harris. Trump rode to a decisive victory on the strength of voter concerns about the economy and immigration, despite warnings from the left and former members of his first administration that he will rule as an authoritarian. “This was the greatest political movement of all time,” Trump told supporters just before 2:30 a.m. at a rally in West Palm Beach, Florida. “Now it’s going to reach a new level of importance because we’re going to help our country heal.” Trump is just the second president to win nonconsecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1892. At 78, he is the oldest person elected to the office. He may also become the second Republican presidential candidate since 1992 to win the popular vote. When Trump takes office in January, he will work with a Senate that will now be controlled by Republicans, though the House is still up for grabs. |

What will Trump do in his second term? |
Donald Trump, who said he would be a “dictator” but only on “Day 1” if he retook the White House, will return to power with an aggressive agenda and fewer constraints than his first term. Here's what to expect: |
Criminal Cases: The Justice Department is moving to wind down the two federal cases against Trump before he takes office, two people familiar with the matter told NBC News, after Trump vowed to fire special counsel Jack Smith if he was re-elected. |
Immigration: Trump has vowed to carry out the largest mass deportation effort in U.S. history, beginning with those who have criminal records or final orders of deportation. |
Abortion and Health Care: Trump, who has taken credit for the fall of Roe v. Wade, maintains that abortion rights should be decided by the states, but he has not explicitly said he would veto a national abortion ban. Trump has also said he would let Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the anti-vaccine activist, “go wild” on public health issues. |
Taxes and Tariffs: The president-elect has promised to extend his 2017 tax overhaul and end taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits. He has also proposed tariffs of 10% to 20% on imported goods. |
LGBT rights: The Trump campaign made opposition to transgender rights a central part of its closing argument, with the president-elect vowing to “keep men out of women's sports.” |
Ukraine and Mideast Wars: Trump has said he would end Russia’s war on Ukraine within a day, though he has not specified how. And he reportedly told Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu that he wants the war in Gaza to be over by January. |
“Extremely critical” fire weather in California, Hurricane Rafael approaches Gulf of Mexico |
Strong Santa Ana winds are bringing “critical” to “extremely critical” fire weather conditions to parts of California, the National Weather Service said. The Mountain Fire burning northwest of Los Angeles has quickly exploded to 1,500 acres and prompted evacuation orders, fire officials said. Several individuals have been injured and transported to local hospitals, and numerous structures are currently threatened, fire officials said. Another brush fire on the Malibu coast has spread to about 50 acres and damaged at least one home, officials said. Also today, a tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of the Florida Keys, as Hurricane Rafael barrels toward Cuba as a major Category 3 storm. |
