Harvey Weinstein found guilty on two counts in rape trial

The once-powerful movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was found guilty on two counts, but acquitted of the most serious charges against him today in a Manhattan courtroom. Stephanie Gosk has been following the case for us.
  • The verdict: Weinstein was convicted of rape in the third degree, after former actress Jessica Mann accused him of attacking her in a New York City hotel room in 2013. The former producer was also found guilty of a criminal sexual act in the first degree against Mimi Haley, a former production assistant who accused Weinstein of forcibly performing oral sex on her in 2006.
  • Partial acquittal: Weinstein was found not guilty on two counts of predatory sexual assault, which could have brought a life sentence, and was also acquitted on a count of first degree rape against Mann. The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for five days to reach their decision.
  • Sentencing March 11: After the verdict came down, the judge ordered Weinstein to jail immediately without bail, and he was handcuffed and removed from the courtroom. When Weintstein is sentenced on March 11, he could get up to 25 years in prison for the criminal sex act conviction, and up to four years for the rape in the third degree count.

Kobe Bryant honored at Staples Center as wife files wrongful death lawsuit

The fans call it The House That Kobe Built, and today the Staples Center was packed by some 20,000 fans celebrating the life of the NBA legend, and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, who died along with seven other people in a helicopter crash last month.
Wife Vanessa Bryant spoke at the ceremony, making her first public appearance since the Jan. 26 crash. “Babe, take care of our Gigi,” she said, “and I got Nani, Bibi and Coco,” referring to the couple’s other three children. “We’re still the best team.”
The ceremony featured performances by Beyoncé and Alicia Keys, and moving speeches from speakers like Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal and Jimmy Kimmel. Also among those in the crowd were Magic Johnson, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez.
A short time before the ceremony began, it was revealed that Vanessa Bryant has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company that operated the doomed helicopter, Island Express.
In the suit, Bryant alleges the pilot, Ara George Zobayan, was recklessly flying at a high rate of speed, and should have aborted the flight in foggy conditions. Island Express has not commented on the lawsuit.
Miguel Almaguer will have a full report on the memorial, and the new lawsuit, tonight.

Coronavirus fears send Dow skidding over 1,000 points

The stock market took a nosedive, with the Dow at one point falling more than 1,000 points after a surge in cases of coronavirus outside mainland China fueled concerns of a potential global pandemic. Richard Engel and Tom Costello are on the story for us tonight.
Health officials are scrambling to contain the virus in Italy, the country with the most cases in Europe, with 229 patients and at least seven people dead. Some 50,000 people in 11 towns in northern Italy are under lockdown.
Iran has the deadliest outbreak outside mainland China. At least 12 people have died, but the government has denied accusations that it is covering up a death toll as high as 50.
More than 200 new cases have been confirmed in South Korea, raising the total number there to at least 833, with a death toll of eight.
