Good Thursday afternoon. Israel has delayed a key vote on its ceasefire deal with Hamas, the Senate held a new round of hearings for several of President-elect Trump’s Cabinet picks, and today we’re remembering visionary director David Lynch and “Mr. Baseball” Bob Uecker. Israel to meet Friday after delaying vote on Gaza ceasefire deal |
Israel’s Cabinet will meet tomorrow to vote on the Gaza ceasefire deal with Hamas, an Israeli official confirmed to NBC News, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the process was delayed by a “last-minute crisis” caused by the militant group. Hamas said in a statement that it is “committed” to the ceasefire agreement that would end 15 months of fighting in Gaza and secure the release of dozens of hostages. Under the deal announced by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, the ceasefire would begin Sunday and last for six weeks. Two Americans will be among the hostages released during Phase 1 of the truce, a senior administration official said. At least 80 people in Gaza have been killed in Israeli strikes since the announcement, the enclave’s Civil Defense said. |

Senate holds confirmation hearings for EPA, Treasury and more Trump Cabinet picks |
The Senate held confirmation hearings today for four more of President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet picks, including Lee Zeldin for the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and Scott Bessent for treasury secretary. Zeldin, a former New York congressman, told the senators he believes climate change is “real,” in contrast to Trump’s past assertions that it’s a “hoax.” Zeldin said Trump is more concerned about “the economic costs of some policies” to fight climate change. Bessent, a billionaire hedge fund executive and political donor, told the Senate Banking Committee that extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts is the top priority for the incoming administration, and warned that failing to do so would lead to an “economic calamity.” Senators also heard today from two other Trump picks, Former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum for interior secretary and Scott Turner, a former NFL player, for housing secretary. |
New concerns over mudslides in California as wildfire deaths rise to 27 |
The Santa Ana winds have died down, but there are growing concerns about mud and debris in Southern California’s fire zone, after one home that survived the Palisades Fire was split into two by a landslide. At least 27 people have now died in the infernos, officials said. The Palisades Fire, the largest blaze, remains at 23,713 acres with containment now up to 22%, and the 14,117-acre Eaton Fire is now at 55% containment. The cause of the fires remains under investigation, but officials are focusing on a scorched slope as they search for the origin of the Palisades Fire, officials said. Investigators have received more than 150 tips, an ATF official said Wednesday. Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected to return to the region next week, according to the National Weather Service. |
Brutal Arctic blast bringing dangerous cold across United States beginning Friday |
A bitter blast of Arctic air will usher in the coldest temperatures of the season across much of the country beginning tomorrow and lasting throughout next week. The frigid air will sweep over the Rockies and Great Plains on Friday. By Saturday, it will expand to the Gulf Coast and the Midwest, and reach the East Coast by Sunday night. In all, more than 300 million Americans will feel below-average temperatures by Monday. New York City has issued a Cold Weather Alert ahead of the dangerous temperatures, and in Washington, D.C., President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration could be the coldest in 40 years. |

TikTok CEO to attend Trump’s inauguration after U.S. ban is set to take effect |
TikTok CEO Shou Chew has been invited to and is expected to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, according to three sources familiar with the matter, two of whom are Trump transition officials. The inauguration will take place a day after a U.S. ban on TikTok is set to take effect on Sunday, if the Supreme Court doesn’t overrule it. The Washington Post reports that Trump is considering an executive action to temporarily suspend enforcement of the ban. Chew is expected to sit alongside other tech CEOs including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, according to one Trump transition official. President Joe Biden, in his farewell address last night, took aim at the Big Tech titans, issuing a warning over the “tech-industrial complex” and arguing there is an “oligarchy taking shape” that threatens American democracy. |
