Biden says Trump held “dagger at the throat of America” |
---|
|
---|
President Joe Biden launched a scathing attack on former President Donald Trump, accusing him of inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, in a speech today marking one year since the attack. |
---|
|
---|
In remarks inside the U.S. Capitol’s Statuary Hall, Biden said the former president and his followers “held a dagger at the throat of America.” |
---|
|
---|
Biden accused Trump of spreading a “web of lies” about the 2020 election, in his most forceful condemnation of his predecessor to date. |
---|
|
---|
“His bruised ego matters more to him than our democracy or our Constitution,” Biden said, adding: “He can’t accept he lost.” |
---|
|
---|
Trump responded in a statement, calling Biden’s speech “very hurtful to many people,” and repeating falsehoods about the election. |

Pelosi on Jan. 6: Trump “dropped a bomb on the Congress” |
---|
|
---|
Pelosi, who was escorted away from the podium in the House chamber as the pro-Trump mob breached the building, recalled the terror of that day. |
---|
|
---|
"It breaks your heart — it’s as if somebody in the White House dropped a bomb on the Congress of the United States,” Pelosi said. |
---|
|
---|
The speaker lamented that so many of the former president’s supporters believed his falsehoods about the election. |
---|
|
---|
“I have great respect for that office, more respect than the previous holder of that office has for that office,” she said. |
---|
|
---|
This afternoon, Pelosi led the House in a moment of silence to mark that “dark day,” and honor the officers who were injured, or died following the attack. |
---|
|
---|
At 5:30 p.m. ET, members of Congress will hold a vigil on the steps of the Capitol. |

Record 9.5 million Covid cases worldwide in the last week |
---|
|
---|
The World Health Organization said today that 9.5 million Covid cases were reported worldwide over the last week, a new record. |
---|
|
---|
The surge, fueled by the highly transmissible Omicron variant, represented a 71-percent increase from the prior week, the WHO said. |
---|
|
---|
The number of deaths, however, fell last week to 41,178 from 44,680, amid indications that Omicron causes less severe disease. |
---|
|
---|
Here in the U.S., the Omicron variant continues to cause major disruptions. In Chicago, the nation’s third-largest school district remains closed for a second day, with officials and teachers at odds over Covid safety issues. |
