NBC News - The Nightly News

By Dan Donahue, NBC Nightly News
Good Thursday afternoon. “Bloody battles” are being waged at a steel plant in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, security is being ramped up around the Supreme Court after that draft opinion leak, and the stock market took a nosedive a day after the Fed announced a rate hike.
Here is what’s in our Nightly Rundown.

Russian forces breach steel plant in Mariupol

“Heavy, bloody battles” are being waged inside the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, a Ukrainian military commander said.
The last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the southern port city has been holed-up for weeks inside the plant, along with scores of civilians.
An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces want to present the steel plant as a “gift” to Vladimir Putin ahead of Monday’s Victory Day celebration, marking the 1945 surrender of Nazi Germany.
The Ukrainian military claimed that Russian forces are preparing for a parade in Mariupol, coinciding with Monday’s Russian holiday.
About 100,000 civilians remain trapped in Mariupol after weeks of relentless attacks, according to the mayor.
This afternoon, the U.N. Security Council is convening to discuss Ukraine. It’s the first meeting on the war since the U.S. took over the council’s rotating presidency for the month of May.

Supreme Court tightens security amid abortion-related protests

An eight-foot fence has been installed around the Supreme Court amid protests over the leaked draft opinion that would overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion ruling.
The “nonscalable” fence is similar to the barrier erected around the U.S. Capitol following the Jan. 6 insurrection.
In the wake of the draft leak, Democrats are scrambling to shore up abortion protections.
The Senate will vote on Wednesday on a bill that would legalize abortion nationally, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer tweeted today.
But the vote is almost certain to fail, with Democrats lacking the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster in the 50-50 Senate.
Meantime Senate Republicans are discussing whether to pursue nationwide abortion restrictions if they gain power in the upcoming midterm elections.

New storm threat after tornadoes strike Texas, Oklahoma

Tornado watches are in effect for parts of Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana until 6 p.m. CT, on the heels of a destructive outbreak of tornadoes overnight.
About 20 million people are at risk this evening for severe storms capable of producing large hail, tornadoes and damaging winds.
Heavy rain associated with storms will bring the threat of flash and urban flooding from the eastern Plains into the Mississippi River Valley, the National Weather Service said.
Overnight, a violent storm system spawned tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma, damaging a school, a marijuana farm and other structures — but no injuries have been reported.

Covid global death toll severely underreported, WHO says

14.9 million people died from Covid-related causes worldwide between Jan. 1, 2020 and Dec. 31, 2021, according to new estimates from the World Health Organization.
That figure is nearly three times less than the 5.4 million Covid deaths officially reported to the WHO during that time frame.
The new estimates come a day after the U.S. topped 1 million Covid deaths, according to NBC News figures.
And now daily Covid hospitalizations and deaths are projected to increase for the first time in months, according to forecast models used by the CDC.
