Pfizer begins clinical trial for Omicron-targeting vaccine |
---|
|
---|
Pfizer says a clinical trial is under way for a version of its Covid vaccine modified to specifically target the highly transmissible Omicron variant. |
---|
|
---|
The trial will enroll up to 1,420 healthy adults ages 18 to 55, and will examine whether the Omicron-specific vaccine is safe and produces a strong immune response. |
---|
|
---|
The announcement comes after the FDA halted the use of Covid antibody drugs from Regeneron and Eli Lilly, saying they don’t work against Omicron. |
---|
|
---|
Health experts are also closely monitoring a new subvariant of Omicron, known as BA.2, that’s been discovered in more than 20 states across the country. |
---|
|
---|
The new subvariant has been dubbed “stealth Omicron” by some researchers, because it may be harder to detect with current tests. But experts say it’s too early to know whether it’s more transmissible, or causes more severe disease. |

Biden may move U.S. troops in “near term” to counter Russia |
---|
|
---|
President Joe Biden suggested he may soon deploy U.S. forces to Eastern Europe, a day after the Pentagon announced 8,500 troops had been placed on heightened alert for a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine. |
---|
|
---|
“I may be moving some of those troops in the near term,” Biden told reporters today, saying the decision depends on the moves Russian President Vladimir Putin makes. |
---|
|
---|
Biden also warned Russia would face “enormous” consequences if it sends troops into Ukraine. “If he were to move in with all those forces, it would be the largest invasion since World War II. It would change the world,” Biden said. |
---|
|
---|
The Kremlin blamed the U.S. today for “building up tension” over Ukraine, as Russia began military exercises in multiple locations involving thousands of troops. |
---|
|
---|
“We are observing these actions of the United States with profound concern,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. |

SAT going completely digital by 2024 |
---|
|
---|
Major changes are coming to the SAT. By 2024, the standardized test will be taken completely online, with shorter sections, and faster results. |
---|
|
---|
The length of the test will be cut from three hours to two hours, and test-takers will get more time between questions, the College Board announced. |
---|
|
---|
The digital SAT will have shorter reading passages that will “reflect a wider range of topics that represent the works students read in college,” the board said. |
---|
|
---|
Students will be allowed to use calculators on the entire math section. |
---|
|
---|
And that agonizing wait for scores will be reduced to days instead of weeks, the board said. |
