Severe storm threat from Texas to New York after deadly tornado outbreak |
A search and rescue operation is continuing in Iowa, after a series of violent tornadoes tore across the state, leaving an unknown number of people dead. Authorities have confirmed fatalities in the hard-hit town of Greenfield, where a tornado with a preliminary rating of at least EF-3 destroyed entire streets of homes, demolished cars, and toppled wind turbines. At least one person was killed southwest of Greenfield when a vehicle was blown off the road during the storm, the Adams County Sheriff's office said. The Midwest is now facing a fourth straight day of severe weather, after at least 20 reports of tornadoes across three states on Tuesday — 18 in Iowa, one in Minnesota and one Wisconsin. Today the severe threat includes 45 million people in areas stretching from central Texas to western New York. |
2 killed, 3 injured in workplace shooting in Pennsylvania |
A “disgruntled former employee” opened fire inside a family-owned linen business near Philadelphia today, killing at least two people and wounding three others, authorities said. The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle but was later pulled over by police, and is now in custody, Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky said. “This is a tragedy, a story that plays out too often across the United States of America,” Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer told reporters. Authorities did not immediately identify the shooter by name, or explain what may have led up to the shooting. |
Uvalde families reach settlement, file new lawsuit against 92 Texas DPS officers |
The city of Uvalde, Texas, has reached a $2 million settlement with the families of children killed in the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School nearly two years ago, their attorneys said. Under the settlement, the city has agreed to police department reforms and will create a memorial for the victims, according to the lawyers. The families have also filed a new lawsuit over the heavily-criticized police response to the massacre, naming 92 individual officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety. The suit also names the Uvalde School District and several individual employees, including the district’s then-police chief Pedro “Pete” Arredondo. The Texas DPS has blamed much of the botched response on Arredondo, who was fired in the aftermath of the shooting, though he said he did not consider himself the officer in command at the scene. |
RNC headquarters locked down after being sent two vials of blood |
The Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., was put under lockdown this morning after receiving a suspicious package containing two vials of blood, U.S. Capitol Police confirmed. The package was cleared away by the Hazardous Incident Response Division, police told NBC News. The package’s source and the contents are under investigation. The road to the RNC headquarters was later reopened, and Capitol Police have left the scene. |
Three European nations recognize a Palestinian state |
The governments of Ireland, Norway and Spain have announced they will formally recognize a Palestinian state, further isolating Israel amid the war in Gaza. Israel swiftly condemned the decision, calling it a “reward for terrorism” and recalling its ambassadors from the capitals of those three countries. The White House said President Joe Biden “believes a Palestinian state should be realized through direct negotiations between the parties, not through unilateral recognition.” Also today, the families of female Israeli soldiers kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7 terror attacks have released disturbing footage of their abduction, as they turn up the pressure on the Israeli government to bring them home. |
