Simone Biles and Team USA win gold in women's gymnastics team final |
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team completed their quest for redemption in a stunning fashion this afternoon at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Led by Simone Biles, the women won gold in the team final, three years after Biles withdrew from the same event in Tokyo citing her mental health, and the team finished with the silver. Biles has now officially become the most decorated American gymnast in the history of the Olympic Games with eight medals. But it was a heartbreaking finish for one of Team USA’s other superstars, Coco Gauff, who lost an argument with a chair umpire and her third-round singles match to Croatia’s Donna Vekic. The men’s triathlon race that was scheduled for this morning has been postponed, after officials acknowledged the Seine River remains too contaminated for safe swimming. And Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina is going viral for this gravity-defying photo that was snapped after he caught a huge wave during the competition happening in Tahiti. |

Israel targets Hezbollah commander in Beirut strike, military confirms |
The Israeli military said it has carried out an airstrike on a Beirut suburb, targeting the commander allegedly responsible for the attack on a soccer field in Israeli-controlled Golan Heights last week that killed 12 children and teens. “The IDF targeted in Beirut the commander responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. One woman was killed and 17 other people were wounded in the strike, Behman Hospital in the southern suburbs confirmed to NBC News. It is not clear whether the targeted commander survived the strike, an Israeli official told NBC News. |
Secret Service chief “ashamed” over Trump assassination attempt |
The acting director of the Secret Service said today he was “ashamed” over the security failures that led up to the assassination attempt this month on former President Donald Trump. Ronald Rowe, who was named interim head of the agency last week after Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned, told the Senate he recently visited the site of the shooting. “I went to the roof of the AGR building where the assailant fired shots and laid in a prone position to evaluate his line of sight. What I saw made me ashamed,” Rowe testified. Rowe said that personnel on the scene did not appear to know the assailant was on the roof with a firearm “until they heard gunshots.” FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate, who appeared alongside Rowe, said the shooter’s motive remains unknown, but that investigators have discovered a social media account that appeared to belong to him with “antisemitic and anti-immigration” posts that espoused political violence. |
Harris to campaign with running mate in battlegrounds next week, sources say |
Kamala Harris, the likely Democratic nominee for president, and her yet-to-be named running mate will hit the campaign trail next week on a battleground state tour, according to two sources familiar with the planning. But Harris told reporters today she has “not yet” made her decision, as she left for a rally in the key battleground of Georgia with rapper Megan Thee Stallion. Harris’ shortlist is narrowing. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has withdrawn from consideration, saying in a statement, “This just wasn’t the right time for North Carolina and for me to potentially be on a national ticket.” NBC News has now confirmed that Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear is being vetted by the Harris team. Other potential contenders include Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona. |
“Catastrophic” flash floods in Vermont; new wildfire threat in California |
An “incredible amount of rain” fell across portions of northeast Vermont overnight, causing “considerable to locally catastrophic flash flooding,” according to the National Weather Service office in Burlington. “Homes have been washed away. Cars are underwater. Some roads have been washed out. Check on the safety of your friends and neighbors,” the NWS wrote in its emergency bulletin. A flash flood emergency was declared in the towns of St. Johnsbury and Danville, after some areas received 8 inches of rain in just 6 hours. On the other side of the country, the Nixon Fire has led to evacuation orders southeast of Los Angeles, while the Park Fire has grown to 385,065 acres to become the fifth-largest fire in California’s recorded history. |
