Supreme Court appears set to allow emergency abortions in Idaho, report says |
The Supreme Court is set to allow abortions in medical emergencies in Idaho, Bloomberg Law reports, citing a document the court acknowledged was mistakenly posted online. A spokeswoman for the court confirmed a document was “inadvertently and briefly uploaded” to the court website, but added that the Idaho ruling “has not been released.” NBC News has not seen a copy of the document and could not independently verify it. It is not known if it was a draft decision, the actual decision, or neither. If the court does allow emergency room doctors in Idaho to perform abortions, it would be a major victory for the Biden administration, which filed a federal lawsuit challenging the state’s strict abortion law. |

Biden and Trump in final preparations for first 2024 presidential debate |
Joe Biden and Donald Trump are just one day away from facing off on stage in their first, highly-anticipated presidential debate since October 2020. President Biden has spent the last several days preparing with advisers at Camp David, taking part in formal mock debates, according to a source familiar with the preparations. Former President Trump has taken a different approach, holding private policy sessions and making campaign appearances. There will be no live audience for the 90-minute debate. Under the rules, each candidate will be given a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water, and they cannot interact with staff during the breaks. Microphones will be muted when a candidate's speaking time is over. NBC News is reporting that Trump could announce his vice presidential pick as early as this week, possibly ahead of tomorrow’s debate, according to four people familiar with the situation. |
Fourth of July parade shooting suspect rejects plea deal |
In courtroom surprise, the man accused of killing seven people and injuring dozens of others in a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in a Chicago suburb in 2022 rejected a plea agreement today. Prosecutors said the suspect had agreed to plead guilty to seven murder counts and 48 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, but when the time came, he backed out. The move brought tears in the courtroom, where dozens of survivors and families of the victims were in attendance. The suspected gunman now faces trial in February of next year. |
Severe storms move east after catastrophic flooding in Midwest |
We’re tracking severe weather moving east after powerful storms caused destructive flooding in the Midwest. Today 78 million people are at risk from the High Plains to the Northeast, including cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Memphis, and Little Rock. Flood watches remain in effect across the Midwest. In Minnesota, officials said there were “dramatic changes” overnight at the Rapidan Dam, where water gushing over one side is eroding the river bank. In a moment caught on camera, a home teetering on the edge of the bank collapsed into the water. Officials say that due to the erosion, they’re now shifting their focus to a bridge that runs over the river near the dam. And that relentless, brutal heat wave is stretching across parts of the South, Midwest and Northeast, with 47 million under alerts this afternoon. |
