Supreme Court confirms authenticity of draft decision to overturn Roe v. Wade |
---|
|
---|
The Supreme Court has confirmed that a leaked draft opinion that would overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling is authentic, but not final. |
---|
|
---|
The court said in a statement that while the document is “authentic, it does not represent a decision by the court or the final position of any member on the issues in the case.” |
---|
|
---|
“To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operations, it will not succeed,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in the statement. “The work of the court will not be affected in any way.” |
---|
|
---|
Roberts has ordered the marshal of the court to launch an investigation into the unprecedented leak of the document, first reported by Politico. |
---|
|
---|
The majority draft written by Justice Samuel Alito declares that Roe, the ruling that guaranteed constitutional protections for abortion rights, “was egregiously wrong from the start.” |
---|
|
---|
President Joe Biden criticized the draft opinion as a “radical decision,” and warned that it could jeopardize other court rulings concerning privacy. |
---|
|
---|
“It concerns me a great deal that we’re going to, after 50 years, decide a woman does not have a right to choose,” Biden said to reporters at Joint Base Andrews. |

Biden: Leaked opinion shows Supreme Court could make 'radical decision' on Roe v. Wade |

More on the Supreme Court leak: |
---|
|
---|
- If Roe is overturned, 23 states would move to ban abortion, according to an NBC News analysis of Center for Reproductive Rights data.
- The Democratic governors of states like California, New York, and Michigan — along with a handful of Republican governors in the Northeast — vowed to fight to protect abortion rights.
- GOP leaders Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy condemned the leak and called for an investigation.
- The draft opinion drew protesters from both sides of the debate to the Supreme Court again today, following demonstrations overnight.

But Russian attacks have resumed at the Azovstal steel plant, where hundreds of civilians remain holed-up with the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the southern port city. |
---|
|
---|
At least two civilians were killed and 10 injured in Russian strikes on the complex, according to a video posted by the Azov regiment on Telegram. |
---|
|
---|
About 100,000 residents are still waiting to be evacuated from the Mariupol, Mayor Vadym Boichenko said. |
---|
|
---|
In the southeast Donetsk region, the governor said at least 10 people were killed and 15 others injured when Russian forces shelled a chemical plant in Avdiivka. |

Trump’s hold over GOP put to the test in Ohio primary |
---|
|
---|
Ohio Republicans are casting ballots today in the state’s contentious Senate primary race, which is putting former President Donald Trump’s grip on the Republican party to the test heading into the midterms. |
