Supreme Court rules Trump has immunity for official acts |
In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has found that Donald Trump is entitled to immunity for some of his conduct in his federal election interference case, substantially raising the bar for prosecuting the former president. In the 6-3 ruling, the court’s conservative majority found that presidents have immunity from prosecution for official acts, but do not have immunity for unofficial acts. The decision sends the matter back down to the lower court to decide whether Trump’s alleged actions in his federal indictment were official or unofficial, making it all but certain that any potential trial would be delayed until after the election. Trump hailed the decision on his social media platform in all caps: “BIG WIN FOR OUR CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY. PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!” The Biden campaign said in a statement: “Today's ruling doesn't change the facts, so let's by very clear about what happened on January 6: Donald Trump snapped after he lost the 2020 election and encouraged a mob to overthrow the results of a free and fair election.” |

Jill Biden vows “we will continue to fight” after debate struggles |
First Lady Jill Biden is defending her husband, President Joe Biden, after his unsteady performance against Donald Trump in their presidential debate last week. The first lady tells Vogue they “will not let those 90 minutes define the four years he’s been president. We will continue to fight.” She added that President Biden “will always do what’s best for the country.” Biden has faced questions about whether he should drop out after his struggles on the debate stage. The New York Times’ editorial board on Friday called on him to leave the race. The president was expected to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with family at Camp David over the weekend, according to five people familiar with the matter. |
Hurricane Beryl makes landfall in Caribbean as major Category 4 storm |
Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Grenada's Carriacou Island earlier today as an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm. Beryl is expected to bring “life-threatening winds and storm surge" to the Windward Islands, which include Grenada, St. Vincent and Martinique, according to the National Hurricane Center. Beryl is the first Category 4 hurricane on record to form in the month of June. While the storm is expected to make a westward turn, U.S. forecasters say it’s too soon to know what could happen if Beryl emerges into the Gulf of Mexico. As we kick off the Fourth of July holiday week, severe storms are possible today for three million people across the Plains and Midwest, and 50 million are under heat alerts along the West Coast and parts of the south-central United States. |
Mistrial declared in Karen Read murder trial after jury deadlocked |
A mistrial has been declared in the Karen Read murder trial after the jury once again told the judge they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict. “We find ourselves divided by fundamental differences in our opinions,” the jury said in its note, after deliberations entered a fifth day. Read is accused of killing her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, in 2022 by hitting him with her SUV and leaving him to die. The defense has argued Read was framed as part of a coverup by the victim’s law enforcement colleagues. |
