NBC News - The Nightly News

By Dan Donahue
Good Tuesday afternoon. A suspect is in custody after a shooting at a Texas elementary school, the FBI has uncovered an ISIS plot to kill a former president, and gas prices have surged to another record ahead of the busy Memorial Day travel weekend.
Here is what’s in our Nightly Rundown.

Suspect in custody after deadly Texas elementary school shooting

We’re following breaking news out of southwest Texas, where police say a suspect is in custody after an active shooter incident at Robb Elementary School.
At least two people were killed, though their ages are not known at this time, and 13 children were taken to the emergency room, according to the CEO of Uvalde Memorial Hospital.
“Shooter is in police custody,” the Uvalde Police Department said on Facebook just after 1 p.m. local time. Police have not released the suspect’s name.
News of the suspect’s capture came less than an hour after the school district tweeted that an “active shooter” was on campus.
“Law enforcement is on site. Your cooperation is needed at this time by not visiting the campus. As soon as more information is gathered it will be shared,” the tweet said.
Students were being taken to Uvalde High School to be reunited with their parents, police and the school district said.

Voters go to the polls in primary elections in four states

Four states are holding primaries today, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas, which is holding a runoff after an election on March 1.
The stakes are especially high for former President Donald Trump, who is once again facing a major test of his influence over the Republican Party.

Races to watch:

  • Georgia GOP governor: Incumbent Brian Kemp, who became a target for Trump after refusing to overturn the state’s 2020 election results, is facing off against Trump-backed David Perdue, the former senator who has embraced the former president’s election falsehoods. Kemp has held a commanding lead over Perdue in recent polls. And in a major break from Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence traveled to Georgia to campaign with Kemp on Monday.
  • Georgia GOP secretary of state: Another Trump target, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, is locked in a fierce primary fight against Trump-endorsed Rep. Jody Hice. Raffensperger said he felt threatened when the former president asked him to “find” enough votes to overturn the state’s 2020 results.
  • Alabama GOP Senate: Rep. Mo Brooks, who spoke at Trump’s rally ahead of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, is hoping to ride a late-stage surge in the polls to victory, after Trump rescinded his endorsement of him in March.
  • Texas GOP attorney general: Trump-backed incumbent Ken Paxton, who is under federal indictment on security fraud charges, appears favored to win the runoff over George P. Bush — son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and nephew of former President George W. Bush.

FBI uncovers ISIS plot to kill George W. Bush

Former President George W. Bush was the target of an assassination plot concocted by an Iraqi man who entered the U.S. in September 2020, according to a an FBI search warrant affidavit obtained by NBC News.
Shihab Ahmed Shihab, of Columbus, Ohio, wanted to provide material support to ISIS and told an FBI confidential source that he wanted to smuggle people into the country via the Mexico border, in order “to murder former president George W. Bush,” according to the FBI documents.
Shihab legally entered the U.S. and then applied for asylum, while also trying to marry a U.S. citizen in order to obtain his immigration status, the FBI said.
The suspect also allegedly went to Dallas for a surveillance trip on Feb. 8, 2022, which included going to Bush’s residence, where he took videos of the gate in front of Bush’s neighborhood, according to the documents.
Shihab is now in custody and facing potential charges including threats against former presidents, visa fraud, and material support to ISIS.
The details of the alleged plot were first reported by Forbes.

200 bodies found in Mariupol’s ruins, Ukraine says

Workers found 200 bodies in a basement of a destroyed apartment building in Mariupol, Ukrainian authorities said.
Russia claimed full control of Mariupol last week, after the Ukraine military ordered its remaining troops to stop defending a steel factory that had become the last stronghold of Ukrainian resistance in the southern port city.
With the invasion hitting the three-month mark, Russia is intensifying its push to surround two key cities in the Donbas region.
President Joe Biden, at a meeting of Indo-Pacific leaders today in Tokyo, told fellow leaders that the war in Ukraine has left them navigating “a dark hour in our shared history.”

Record gas prices ahead of Memorial Day travel

Gas prices have hit a new record, with the national average hitting $4.60 a gallon and all 50 states above $4 a gallon, just days before the busy Memorial Day weekend.
The national average has not fallen for nearly a month, and gas prices have set a new record every day since May 10, according to AAA.
More than 39 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend, an increase of 8.3 percent over 2021, and approaching pre-pandemic levels, according to AAA.
Air travel also continues to rebound, up 25 percent over last year, the second-largest increase since 2010.

What else we’re watching:

  • The man suspected in a deadly shooting on the New York City subway is now in police custody, after confusion over an arranged surrender.
  • NOAA has released an “above average” hurricane forecast for 2022, predicting 14 to 21 named storms, 6 to 10 hurricanes and 3 to 6 major hurricanes.
  • First Lady Jill Biden and Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy will greet a second flight carrying baby formula from Europe when it lands in the U.S. tomorrow, the White House said.
  • There are now confirmed or suspected cases of monkeypox in five states: Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Utah and Washington.
