Tiger Woods crash caused by speed, sheriff says |
---|
|
---|
Tiger Woods was driving about 40 miles mph over the speed limit when he crashed his SUV in February, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said today. |
---|
|
---|
“The primary causal factor of this traffic collision was driving at a speed unsafe for the road conditions and inability to negotiate the curve of the roadway,” said Sheriff Alex Villanueva. |
---|
|
---|
Woods was driving 84 to 87 mph in a 45 mph zone when his SUV struck a median, and the vehicle was still traveling at an estimated 75 mph when it slammed into a tree. |
---|
|
---|
There were no signs of impairment, and Woods was not ticketed and will not face criminal charges, authorities said. |
---|
|
---|
Captain James Powers said data from the SUV’s black box showed Woods had applied pressure to the gas pedal throughout the crash. Powers speculated that Woods, in a panic, mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brake. |
---|
|
---|
Woods’ SUV was the only vehicle involved in the crash. He suffered serious injuries to his right leg that required emergency surgery. Power said Woods has no recollection of the crash. |

CDC: U.K. variant now dominant strain in the U.S. |
---|
|
---|
The coronavirus variant from the U.K. is “now the most common lineage circulating” in the U.S., CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said today. |
---|
|
---|
The U.K. variant appears to be more contagious and deadlier than earlier strains of the virus, recent studies have found. |
---|
|
---|
The variant has now been reported in all 50 states, and could be a major factor fueling the rise in cases across the nation. |
---|
|
---|
The U.S. is now averaging more than 63,000 cases a day, an increase of more than 2 percent since last week. |
---|
|
---|
Five states account for nearly half of the country’s new Covid cases in the past week — New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. |
---|
|
---|
Hospitalizations have also climbed to about 5,000 a day, and hospitals are seeing “more and more younger adults” in the 30s and 40s admitted with severe Covid, Walensky said during the White House Covid task force briefing. |
---|
|
---|
The CDC is also receiving reports across the country of Covid clusters associated with day care centers and youth sports, Walensky said. |
---|
|
---|
CDC guidance suggests refraining from youth sports that are not outside and cannot be conducted at least six feet apart. |

Outside expert testifies Derek Chauvin used “deadly force” on George Floyd |
---|
|
---|
A Los Angeles Police Department sergeant, who has trained thousands of police officers in use-of-force tactics, continued his testimony today in the trial of Derek Chauvin. |
---|
|
---|
Sgt. Jody Stiger, testified that Chauvin’s use of a knee restraint on George Floyd’s neck constituted “deadly force,” because Floyd was not resisting, and was handcuffed in a prone position. |
---|
|
---|
“He was not attempting to evade. He was not attempting to resist and that pressure that was being caused by the body weight could cause asphyxia, which could cause death,” Stiger said. |
---|
|
---|
Stiger also said it appeared Chauvin never took his knee off Floyd for the entire 9 minutes and 29 seconds. The defense has argued that Chauvin’s knee can be seen on Floyd’s shoulder blade area at some points in the video footage of the incident. |
---|
|
---|
Stiger said that police officers have known for at least 20 years that asphyxia is a risk when putting a subject in such a position. |
---|
|
---|
Chauvin’s defense has also argued that the crowd that witnessed Floyd being restrained was angry, and distracted the officers. |
---|
|
---|
Stiger disagreed, saying he did not find the crowd threatening. “They were merely filming, and most of it was their concern for Mr. Floyd,” he said. |
