NBC News - The Nightly News

By Dan Donahue, NBC Nightly News
Good Monday afternoon. A federal judge has overturned the CDC’s mask mandate for travel, Ukrainian officials say Russian airstrikes have killed at least seven in the western city of Lviv, and we’re tracking a coastal storm on the move.
Here is what’s in our Nightly Rundown.

Federal judge overturns CDC mask mandate for planes, public transit

A federal judge in Florida today struck down the government's mask mandate for planes, trains, and other forms of public transportation.
The ruling said the CDC overstepped its legal authority by imposing the mask requirement and violated “the procedures required for agency rulemaking.”
It comes just days after the CDC said it was extending the federal travel mask mandate for 15 days, until May 3.
The Justice Department declined immediate comment on whether it would seek to block the judge’s order. The CDC, FAA, and TSA said they are evaluating their options.
Mask mandates have been making a return amid the nation’s recent rise in Covid cases fueled by the BA.2 Omicron subvariant.
Philadelphia’s indoor mask mandate went back into effect today, after cases jumped about 50 percent in 10 days.
Several businesses and residents have filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the city’s mandate.
And UConn is joining the growing list of colleges reinstating mask mandates as cases rise on campuses.

Russian airstrikes kill at least seven in Lviv, Ukraine says

At least seven people were killed after a Russian missile attack on the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, Ukrainian officials said.
The missiles struck three military targets, and a fourth hit a tire-fitting garage, according to Ukrainian officials.
The deaths were the first reported in Lviv since the invasion began. The city, about 40 miles from the Polish border, has remained relatively unscathed during the nearly two-month long conflict.
The attacks in western Ukraine came even as Russia is refocusing its offensive in the country’s eastern regions.
Russia said it struck more than 20 Ukrainian military targets with missiles today in several areas in the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro regions.
The southeastern port city of Mariupol remains teetering on the brink after Ukrainian forces defied Russia’s deadline to surrender on Sunday.
Mariupol’s defenders have had “significant success” in slowing Russia’s advance, Ukraine’s defense ministry said today.
