Good Wednesday afternoon. Former President Trump will remain banned from Facebook — at least for now, the CDC is projecting a “sharp decline” in Covid by mid-summer, and Peloton has issued a recall on one of its popular products after a child’s death. |

Facebook oversight board upholds Trump’s suspension |
---|
|
---|
President Donald Trump will remain suspended from Facebook for now, but the tech giant has six months to review the matter and make a final decision, Facebook’s Oversight Board ruled today. |
---|
|
---|
“Given the seriousness of the violations and the ongoing risk of violence, Facebook was justified in suspending Mr. Trump’s accounts on January 6 and extending that suspension on January 7,” the board said in its decision. |
---|
|
---|
The board, which is funded by Facebook but is intended to operate independently, said that Trump “created an environment where a serious risk of violence was possible” by pushing the false narrative that the 2020 presidential election was fraudulent. |
---|
|
---|
But the panel took issue with Facebook barring Trump “indefinitely,” and said the platform must decide on a “defined” penalty within six months. |
---|
|
---|
Twitter permanently banned Trump on Jan. 8, and YouTube, which is owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc., banned him on Jan. 12 until it determines “that the risk of violence has decreased.” |
---|
|
---|
Following the Facebook board’s announcement, Trump lashed out at the tech giants in a statement. |
---|
|
---|
“What Facebook, Twitter, and Google have done is a total disgrace and an embarrassment to our Country,” he said. |

GOP effort to oust Liz Cheney from leadership gains momentum |
---|
|
---|
Another top Republican is backing the effort to remove Rep. Liz Cheney, the third-highest ranked Republican in the House, from her leadership role after her continued criticisms of former President Trump’s falsehoods about his election loss. |
---|
|
---|
Rep. Steve Scalise, the second-ranking House Republican, is publicly backing Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Trump loyalist, to replace Cheney as chair of the House Republican Conference. |
---|
|
---|
Scalise spokeswoman Lauren Fine told NBC News, “House Republicans need to be solely focused on taking back the House in 2022 and fighting against Speaker Pelosi and President Biden’s radical socialist agenda, and Elise Stefanik is strongly committed to doing that, which is why Whip Scalise has pledged to support her for conference chair.” |
---|
|
---|
Both Scalise and Stefanik are among the 147 Republicans who voted to overturn election results, hours after a pro-Trump mob rioted at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. |
---|
|
---|
Trump said in a statement today that Cheney “has no business” in Republican leadership and endorsed Stefanik as a “far superior choice.” |
---|
|
---|
On Tuesday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy was caught on a hot mic saying he has “lost confidence” in Cheney, Axios reported. |
---|
|
---|
Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting the Capitol riot. On Monday, she once again called out the former president for continuing to spread baseless claims about the election. |
---|
|
---|
“The 2020 presidential election was not stolen,” Cheney tweeted. “Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system.” |
---|
|

President Biden was asked about the power struggle within the GOP as he picked up lunch this afternoon. “I don’t understand the Republicans,” he replied. |

CDC projects “sharp decline” in U.S. Covid cases by July |
---|
|
---|
There is new hope the U.S. could move beyond the worst of the pandemic this summer, if high rates of vaccinations are maintained and Americans continue mitigation efforts, according to new projections from the CDC. |
---|
|
---|
“A sharp decline in cases was projected by July 2021, with a faster decline in the high-vaccination scenarios,” the authors of the new CDC study wrote. |
---|
|
---|
The report comes a day after President Biden set a new goal of administering at least one dose of the Covid vaccine to 70 percent of adults by the Fourth of July. |
---|
|
---|
The U.S. has already administered at least one shot to more than 56 percent of the adult population, according to the CDC. |
---|
|
---|
But the pace has been plummeting. Covid vaccinations have fallen more than 40 percent since April 10, when they peaked at 4.6 million daily shots. |

Peloton recalls treadmills after child’s death, over 70 injuries |
---|
|
---|
Peloton admitted it had made a “mistake” and announced a voluntary recall today on its Tread+ and Tread treadmills, over child safety concerns. |
---|
|
---|
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said a 6-year-old was killed after being pulled under the rear of a Tread+ machine. |
---|
|
---|
The CPSC also said the Tread+ has been associated with 72 reports of injuries, including 29 children who suffered a range of injuries including second- and third-degree abrasions, broken bones, and lacerations. |
---|
|
---|
Customers are advised to immediately stop using the Tread+ for a full refund by Nov. 6, 2022., Peloton said in a joint statement with the CPSC. |
---|
|
---|
Peloton resisted a recall after the CPSC issued a warning last month urging customers with children in their homes to stop using the Tread+ immediately.” |
---|
|
---|
Today, Peloton CEO John Foley admitted that was wrong. |
---|
|
---|
“I want to be clear, Peloton made a mistake in our initial response to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request that we recall the Tread+,” Foley said in the statement. “We should have engaged more productively with them from the outset. For that, I apologize.” |
