Trump invokes Fifth Amendment in New York investigation |
---|
|
---|
Former President Donald Trump said he invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination today during a deposition in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ civil investigation into his businesses. |
---|
|
---|
“I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?’” Trump said in a statement. “Now I know the answer to that question.” |
---|
|
---|
Trump said that on the advice of his counsel, he declined to answer questions “under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution.” |
---|
|
---|
James’ office has said in court filings that it has uncovered “significant evidence” of fraud in its civil investigation into Trump and the Trump Organization. |
---|
|
---|
Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has accused James, a Democrat, of targeting him for political reasons. |
---|
|
---|
The unprecedented search was related to classified material, multiple sources have confirmed to NBC News. |

U.S. inflation slows slightly to 8.5 percent in July |
---|
|
---|
Consumer prices rose 8.5 percent in July year over year, down from a 40-year high of 9.1 percent in June, as inflation cooled more than expected. |
---|
|
---|
The slowing pace in July was mostly due to falling gas prices, with the national average on the verge of dropping below $4 for a gallon of regular, about a dollar less than the record high in June. |
---|
|
---|
Americans are still paying more for many things, including food. Grocery prices rose 1.1 percent in July and are 13 percent higher than a year ago. It’s the biggest year-over-year increase since 1979. |
---|
|
---|
The Federal Reserve, in an effort to tame inflation, raised interest rates by three-quarters of a point in both June and July, and is expected to announce another hike at its next meeting in September. |

Iranian national charged in plot to kill John Bolton |
---|
|
---|
A member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was charged in an alleged murder-for-hire plot to kill former Trump national security adviser John Bolton, the Justice Department announced today. |
---|
|
---|
Shahram Poursafi is accused of offering $300,000 for the assassination of Bolton, likely in retaliation for the January 2020 killing of Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, the Justice Department said. |
---|
|
---|
Bolton, a fierce critic of Iran who had left the White House by the time Soleimani was killed, tweeted back then, “Hope this is the first step to regime change in Tehran.” |
---|
|
---|
Poursafi, who remains at large abroad, is charged with the use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire, providing and attempting to provide material support to a transnational murder plot. |
---|
|
---|
Bolton, in a statement, thanked U.S. authorities for uncovering the alleged plot, and added: “While much cannot be said publicly right now, one point is indisputable: Iran’s rulers are liars, terrorists, and enemies of the United States.” |

Ukraine says nine Russian warplanes destroyed in Crimea blasts |

The explosions, captured on video, send massive plumes of smoke into the sky on Tuesday. At least one person was killed, and several others injured, according to authorities. |
---|
|
---|
Ukrainian officials have not explicitly claimed responsibility for the blasts. Russia has denied that any attack took place, and said no planes were damaged. |
