Tonight Gabe Gutierrez will bring us the stories of the doctors and nurses risking their own health on the front lines. |

“We need space and beds. This is a war. I’m going into war and trying not to get killed,” said one doctor in Brooklyn, who works at a large hospital system. “We are trying to go to work and not die.” |

One of the city’s hospitals, Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, had 13 coronavirus patients die in just 24 hours, according to NYC Health & Hospitals. |
---|
|
---|
“Elmhurst is at the center of this crisis, and it's the number one priority of our public hospital system right now,” NYC Health & Hospitals spokesman Christopher Miller told NBC News. “The frontline staff are going above and beyond in this crisis, and we continue surging supplies and personnel to this critical facility to keep pace with the crisis.” |

At the Mount Sinai Health System, images posted on social media have shown hospital workers using trash bags as protective equipment. |

“The safety and protection of all Mount Sinai staff and patients is always — and will always be — our absolute top priority,” Mount Sinai said in a statement. |
---|
|
---|
“To be clear: we always provide all our staff with the critically important PPE they need to safely do their job. In fact, the troubling photo circulating in the media specifically shows the nurses in proper PPE underneath garbage bags,” the statement said. |

U.S. jobless claims surge to record-shattering 3.28 million |
---|
|
---|
Tom Costello is reporting tonight on unemployment claims jumping a staggering 3.28 million last week, shattering the previous record as the coronavirus pandemic holds the U.S. economy at a standstill. |
---|
|
---|
The number reported by the Labor Department far exceeds the all-time mark of 695,000 jobless claims in Oct. 1982. Even at the peak of the Great Recession in March 2009, weekly claims topped out at 665,000. |
---|
|
---|
Today’s jobless report also defied the expectations of economists, who had predicted 1.5 million claims for last week. |
---|
|
---|
Despite the dismal numbers, the stock market surged today, with the Dow gaining 1,351 points by the closing bell — after the Senate unanimously passed its $2 trillion relief plan overnight |
---|
|

The House is expected to pass it tomorrow, and President Trump has vowed to sign it. |

Trump to issue new guidelines for reducing social distancing |
---|
|
---|
“My Administration is working to publish new guidelines for State and local policymakers to use in making decisions about maintaining, increasing, or relaxing social distancing and other mitigation measures they have put in place,” Trump said in a letter to the nation’s governors. |
---|
|
---|
Trump has shown increasing impatience with social distancing measures that have forced businesses all across the country to shut down. |
---|
|
---|
The “15 Days to Slow the Spread” guidelines issued by his administration are set to expire next week, and Trump has said he would like to see the U.S. “opened up” again by Easter. |
---|
|
---|
Trump said in his letter that “expanding testing capabilities” will soon allow the administration to “suggest guidelines categorizing counties as high-risk, medium-risk, or low-risk.” |

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infection disease expert, has warned that Americans will likely have to stay home for several weeks. |
