Jury in Harvey Weinstein trial tells judge it is deadlocked on two counts |
---|
|
---|
Harvey Weinstein’s trial took another dramatic turn this afternoon, when the jury told the judge they are deadlocked on the two most serious counts against the former movie mogul. Stephanie Gosk has been following this case for us. |
---|
|
---|
The judge told the jury to continue deliberations, after they sent a note telling him they were split on the two counts of predatory sexual assault, which carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. The judge additionally said that any verdict must be unanimous. |
---|
|
---|
Weinstein is accused of raping a woman in a New York City hotel room on 2013, and performing a forcible sexual act on another alleged victim in 2006. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty and has denied all nonconsensual sexual activity. |
---|
|
---|
Shortly after the judge ordered deliberations to continue, he sent the jurors home for the weekend. Deliberations will resume on Monday. |

Trump says warning of new Russian meddling in 2020 election is “hoax” |
---|
|
---|
President Trump accused Democrats of launching a “misinformation campaign” after U.S. intelligence officials warned Congress that Russia is meddling in the 2020 election to help re-elect him, dismissing the alert as nothing more than a “hoax.” Andrea Mitchell is following the firestorm tonight. |
---|
|
---|
Briefing angers Trump: The president was infuriated after a top intelligence official told the House Intelligence Committee last week that Russia was seeking to interfere in the election again on Trump’s behalf, a former intelligence official briefed on the matter told NBC News.Spy chief shake-up: Trump reacted to the briefing by forcing out his acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire, a move that has the DNI’s office “nearing a meltdown,” one former official said.Grenell backlash: Trump replaced Maguire as acting DNI with a political ally, U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, whose lack of intelligence experience has outraged Democrats. Trump tweeted today that he had “four great candidates” under consideration for the permanent job, and said he would make a decision within the next few weeks. |

The Democratic candidates are on their last sprint through Nevada ahead of the state’s critical caucuses on Saturday. Geoff Bennett is covering the fight to the finish for us tonight. |

Frontrunner Bernie Sanders will hold a rally this evening in Las Vegas, after spending part of the day in California. Sanders has opened up a lead in the polls in California, the biggest prize in the Super Tuesday primaries on March 3. |
---|
|
---|
With tomorrow’s caucuses fast approaching, Sanders is leveling new attacks on Michael Bloomberg, after the billionaire’s debut performance in the NBC News and MSNBC debate on Wednesday was heavily criticized. “If that’s what happened in a Democratic debate, I think it’s quite likely Trump will chew him up and spit him out,” Sanders said in an upcoming “60 Minutes” interview. |
---|
|
---|
According to the newly-released data, 31 percent of black Democratic primary voters prefer Biden, while Sanders is supported by 29 percent. Last year, Biden led Sanders among black voters by as much as 30 points in NBC News/WSJ polls. |
---|
|
---|
Biden is also holding a rally in Las Vegas tonight, and Pete Buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren, and Amy Klobuchar are holding events throughout the state. |

Wells Fargo to pay $3 billion in settlement for fake accounts scandal |
---|
|
---|
As part of the settlement, Wells Fargo admitted that it collected “millions of dollars in fees and interest to which the company was not entitled, harmed the credit ratings of certain customers, and unlawfully misused customers’ sensitive personal information,” according to the U.S. State Attorney’s Office of the Central District of California. |
---|
|
---|
The scandal erupted in 2016, when it was revealed that Wells Fargo employees had opened millions of savings and checking accounts in the names of customers, without them knowing about it. In 2018, federal regulators also hit Wells Fargo with a $1 billion fine for loan abuses. |

“Doomsday” mother of two missing Idaho children arrested in Hawaii |
---|
|
---|
Lori Vallow, the mother of two children who haven’t been seen in months, has been arrested in Hawaii on an Idaho warrant, police said. Miguel Almaguer is reporting on the case for us tonight. |
---|
|
---|
Vallow faces two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children, among other charges, the Kauai Police Department said in a statement on Twitter. Vallow is behind bars on $5 million bail. |
---|
|
---|
Vallow’s children, Tylee Ryan, 17, and Joshua Vallow, 7, have been missing since September. Police have been searching for them since November, when an officer in Rexburg, Idaho attempted to conduct a welfare check on Joshua, who is adopted and has special needs. |
---|
|
---|
In December, Rexburg police said that Vallow had “completely refused to assist in the investigation,” and said that she had left the state with her new husband Chad Daybell. |
---|
|
---|
Relatives have alleged that Vallow was involved in a “doomsday cult,” and Daybell has authored a number of books about the end of the world. |
