Inside the order requiring Utah universities to release NIL contracts
In an order issued Monday, the State Records Committee explained its reasoning for requiring five Division I schools in Utah to disclose the NIL contracts with an athlete’s name, sport and compensation, as well as the name of the business.
Earlier this year theDeseret News requested NIL contracts and written agreements athletes submitted to five Utah public universities. All five denied the initial requests and the subsequent appeals.
Attorneys for the universities contended that release of the contracts would be a violation of FERPA, reveal private financial information and be an unwarranted invasion of privacy.
The State Records Committee concluded that it’s self-evident that college athletes give up some of their privacy when they sign deals to profit from their name, image and likeness.

Utah’s senators spoke harshly of the Biden administration’s border policies Tuesday as Border Patrol encounters approach 300,000 per month and two-and-a-half million per year for the first time ever.
What Sen. Mitt Romney said:“If that were my record, I would resign in shame or I would have fashioned a piece of legislation designed to solve that problem and worked like crazy to get it passed. I don’t think you’ve done either one of those things.”
What Sen. Mike Lee said: “We don’t know who a lot of these people are. In fact, we know that some of them don’t mean us well. The American people deserve to have a secure border. And every day that elapses when we have an insecure border is a day that threatens our homeland security.”
