Good evening, It used to be declining high street shopping which acted as a litmus test for the discontent and fear of the British people. In Covid times, the sign that people fear bad times to come is represented in the emptying of the loo roll shelf at the supermarket. It’s a sort of ‘everyone for themselves ‘ approach to the pandemic, which undermines the waves of generosity and goodwill which typified the lockdown. Which is a shame - we really are our own worst enemies. Because if there is one thing loo roll retailers learned in the last six months it’s to keep supplies flowing nicely in a crisis -because we seem to value wiping our bottoms higher than everything else, it seems. And I’m not sure what that says about humankind. It’s probably a sign of confusion - anyone can be forgiven for not quite understanding what the latest lockdown rules are but we do have a responsibility to find out, for the safety of our own families and others. We will, as always, endeavour to translate the government guidance for everyone and answer those tricky questions for you with a little help from our learned friends. We are compiling a list of questions - let me know if you have any we can get answered. Enjoy your Wednesday. Regards, Nicola Adam Deputy Editor |
