No deal in Minneapolis educators strike

Officials with the Minneapolis Public Schools and Minneapolis Federation of Teachers traded proposals and counter-proposals over the weekend, but a deal to end a strike by the MFT remains elusive.

On Sunday, groups chanted outside of MPS headquarters in north Minneapolis as both sides met in long bargaining sessions.

“We've got to get class size caps in the contract, mental health supports in the contract, we need living wages for our hourly ESPs and we need competitive pay for our license folks,” said Shaun Laden, president of the education support professionals chapter of the MFT.

The union is also looking for raises for teachers and a more sustained effort to retain teachers of color.

“We are hemorrhaging educators. I keep saying this. We cannot keep the people in the building and our students need stability,” said Greta Callahan, president of the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers.

What else we're watching:
Surplus steals show, but borrowing plan still in Capitol mix Senate Capital Investment Committee Chair Tom Bakk, a Republican-aligned independent from Cook, said his plan will probably concentrate on wastewater facilities, transportation, college building rehabilitations, public safety projects and other deferred maintenance. “I don't want to use the word milquetoast, but it'll be a pretty basic bill largely,” Bakk said.

Unprecedented campaign kicks off for open CD1 seat  Tuesday is the deadline for candidates to file for an election this summer for the congressional seat left open by the death of Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn. The unusual circumstances mean there will be one election in August to fill out the remainder of Hagedorn’s term and another in November for a two-year term in a newly drawn district. Hageorn's widow, Jennifer Carnahan, is the most recent candidate announcing their intent to run for the seat.
