Good morning, Minnesota. Last night, Minneapolis’ Charter Commission delayed its decision on a proposal to replace the city’s Police Department, ending the possibility of voters deciding the issue in November. More on this news, after weather. Hazy summer day. Highs today across Minnesota will be slightly warmer than yesterday’s, in the mid-70s to the lower 80s. Southern Minnesota may see some lingering showers today, while other parts of Minnesota will remain mostly sunny. Minneapolis residents won’t get to vote on whether to replace MPD this fall. The city’s Charter Commission on Wednesday voted to put the charter amendment process on hold , which means there won’t be enough time for the language to meet the Aug. 21 deadline for the Nov. 3 election. Some commissioners who supported the delay said the process was too rushed to make such an important decision and they needed more time to review the proposal, while others, along with authors of the amendment and community groups, said it should be up to voters, not the commission, to decide whether they need more information. Nobody, not even the CDC, accurately tracks health workers lost to COVID-19. Dr. Claire Rezba in March started counting fellow health care workers who died from COVID-19 before the CDC’s data became available. And when the federal agency published its numbers in April, there was a big discrepancy. “I’m, like, just one person using Google and I had already counted more than 200 people and they’re saying 27? … That was upsetting,” Rezba said. Researchers and industry experts say the lack of good official data on these deaths is “scandalous” and is putting lives in danger. Minnesota’s health officials say: yes to flu shots, no to Sturgis. Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm wants Minnesotans to make sure their vaccinations — especially for the flu — are up to date to make it easier to battle COVID-19 this fall. On the other hand, she’s cautioning that the Sturgis motorcycle rally that starts tomorrow is “ripe” for the virus’ spread. Here are the latest coronavirus statistics in Minnesota: 57,779 cases confirmed (629 new) via 1,090,303 tests 1,629 deaths (nine new) 5,373 cases requiring hospitalization 305 people remain hospitalized; 152 in intensive care 51,223 patients no longer needing isolation — Jiwon Choi, MPR News | @ChoiGEE1 |
