US dollar on the back foot

The dollar has erased more than half the year's gains in the past couple of weeks, with the market betting that the US Fed will temper its aggressive stance on hiking rates. The speculation around the reopening of China is also a factor. TreasuryONE notes that when coupled with this risk-on sentiment, the news that President Ramaphosa is unlikely to resign has helped the rand strengthen to around R17.24 - a far cry from the R17.95 we saw at the start of the month.

The rand isn't out of the woods yet, with any fresh news around the Phala Phala report likely to drive volatility in a period where little fresh data is expected.

In commodities, the news in China caused Brent Crude to jump to $88 per barrel. The balancing factor is the market pricing in low demand in 2023. The gold price slipped, trading at $1,790 per ounce.
