Protecting kids: Prompted by the tragic deaths of several children, state lawmakers adopted a bill during the past session to create a watchdog to monitor state agencies that protect children. Reporter Andrea Gallo tells us how the Office of the State Child Ombudsman will work.

Covering canals, adding lanes: Folks in Jefferson Parish have talked for years about covering the canals that run between busy roadways, or at the very least, adding guardrails along them. Drew Broach tells us why that hasn’t happened. On the north shore, meanwhile, drivers are happily – and swiftly – motoring along the newly-added lanes on I-12 through the Covington area.
Baseball and Jell-O shots: Sticking with sports, LSU’s baseball team dropped a tough game last night at the College World Series and faces an elimination game tonight against Tennessee. But . . . LSU did set the new record for Jell-o shot purchases at an Omaha, Nebraska, bar with the help of the Raising Cane’s restaurant founder, Wilson Alexander reports.
