No lunch breaks for child workers?

Anti-labor bills: Employers would not have to offer children lunch breaks under a bill a Louisiana House committee advanced Thursday, James Finn reports. The panel also advanced bills to cut unemployment benefits. 


Public records: Gov. Jeff Landry is supporting a bill that would shield emails, texts and other communications by public officials from public view, Finn reports. Landry, who pledged transparency as he campaigned for governor, now says public records requests have been "weaponized."


Race in schools: Louisiana public schools could be barred from teaching about systemic racism under a bill the state Senate passed Monday, Patrick Wall reports. Its Republicans' latest attempt to restrict lessons on so-called critical race theory.

Numbers to Know

Under a proposed shift in the state's unemployment system:

People would collect unemployment benefits for 20 weeks of a year, but only when the state unemployment rate is 8.5% or higher

_____

If the state rate is 5% or less, they may only collect up to 12 weeks of benefits 

_____

Right now, people can collect benefits for 26 weeks a year, regardless of the state rate 

_____

The state rate as of February was 4.2%
