At an intellectual and theological level, we all know that pastors are just like other Christians: imperfect, human. But for some reason, we often behave as if they’re some kind of superheroes. We expect them to do everything, visit everyone, and do it all without getting grumpy or discouraged. Of course, that mentality just sets up a church for disappointment—and pastors for failure. The role of a pastor is a high and holy calling, but it’s filled by fallible people, not superheroes.
In this conversation with four pastors, Daniel Harrell admits, “From my own experience, I know that we pastors are often subject to messiah complexes. We want to help; we want to be a hero. But, as John the Baptist reminds us, we are not the Christ.” This conversation provides plenty of hard-won insights into how pastors can meet people’s needs without
resorting to heroics.
