Hi friends, We’re officially living through the chaos of the largest tariffs in modern history, a self-imposed global crisis unlike anything we’ve seen before. And while there’s a sliver of satisfaction in seeing even Trump’s most ardent billionaire supporters start to squirm, the fallout from these tariffs is very real. Not just for brands like ours—small businesses who understand the complexities of clothing production—but for everyday Americans whose 401(k)s and retirement plans are tied to a "market" they were never supposed to have to worry about let alone understand The terrifying truth? A small handful of people who seem to understand very little about how trade and tariffs actually work are dismantling a global economy. It's like dealing with an alcoholic parent: the worst part isn’t even the chaos, it’s the unpredictability. You can’t make a plan. You can’t move forward. This kind of instability doesn’t just hurt, it steals. It robs us of our work, our creativity, our joy, our sense of purpose. It chips away at everything we put out into the world with care and love. How dare he. (!) As you can imagine, I’ve been glued to my phone for the past 24 hours– commiserating with friends in the industry (what are you guys going to do?!), trying to make sense of the future. A good friend of mine, D—who happens to be the CEO of one of the biggest brands in the world—texted me something that stuck: “The Chinese symbol for crisis is also the symbol for opportunity.” Right. So. After allowing ourselves to scream out more than a few expletives, we’re choosing to use this moment to double down. On who we are. On our values. On you, our community. On our ethos: give a damn. On our commitment to putting only our best into the world, and telling stories that matter. In this crisis, we believe the opportunity is a chance to deepen all of that and more. To reconnect to our core. To lead with purpose. It’s hard to see that opportunity right now, but I know it’s there. I feel it after sending newsletters like these and getting your replies. I see it in neighbors who smile at me when I walk by in my “I didn’t vote for him” sweatshirt and in the witty signs and memes spotted at this weekend’s Hands Off protest and on my IG feed. I feel it in the quiet ways Americans are coming together with our shared values. None of us voted for this. And honestly? Those of you who did happen to vote for this big Orange dude? Let’s make a deal, ok? I’ll forgive your vote for him—if you’re finally willing to admit you were lied to. Admit it was the wrong choice. And if you’re ready to be part of the path forward, toward decency, truth, and accountability, then let’s go! Join me in creating some “ good trouble.” Let’s come together and fight to bring this country back to sanity. I want to believe that if the roles were reversed, I’d be able to do the same. I’m 99.9% sure I would. In the meantime, I’m heading back to Gloria Steinem’s living room this afternoon (can you even?), this time with my friend Bobbi Brown. I'm looking forward to soaking up her calming spirit and wisdom. I’m also doing my best to stay grounded. To tune out the noise and focus on what really matters. I’m so grateful for this community, and for this work. I’ll continue supporting small businesses who are being hit hardest by these tariffs. And even though I’ve joked that we might be out of business soon, don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere. We’ve got important messages to stitch. And they’re needed now more than ever. xo Rachelle |
