Working with wav2vec2 Part 2 - Running Inference on Finetuned ASR Models

TL;DR Step-by-step guide on how to run inference on a finetuned wav2vec2 XLS-R model. Read More.

By @pictureinthenoise [ 11 Min read ]

This is a companion guide to Working With wav2vec2 Part 1 - Finetuning XLS-R for Automatic Speech Recognition (the "Part 1 guide"). I wrote the Part 1 guide on how to finetune Meta AI's wav2vec2 XLS-R ("XLS-R") model on Chilean Spanish. It is assumed that you have completed that guide and have generated your own finetuned XLS-R model. This guide will explain the steps to run inference on your finetuned XLS-R model via a Kaggle Notebook.

To complete the guide, you will need to have:

This guide uses the Peruvian Spanish Speech Data Set as its source for test data. Like the Chilean Spanish Speech Data Set, the Peruvian speakers dataset also consists of two sub-datasets: 2,918 recordings of male Peruvian speakers and 2,529 recordings of female Peruvian speakers.

This dataset has been uploaded to Kaggle as 2 distinct datasets:

Recordings of Peruvian male speakers..

Failure is Required, So Embrace It: Understanding Fail-Safe and Fail-Fast Strategies In Software

TL;DR Learn how embracing failure can improve your apps quality, leading to early error detection, robust error handling, and better overall stability. Read More.

By @shai.almog [ 7 Min read ]

Failures in software systems are inevitable. How these failures are handled can significantly impact system performance, reliability, and the business’s bottom line. In this post, I want to discuss the upside of failure. Why you should seek failure, why failure is good, and why avoiding failure can reduce the reliability of your application. We will start with the discussion of fail-fast vs. fail-safe; this will take us to the second discussion about failures in general.

Nvidia’s Shaky Q2 Underlines the Stock as Generative AI’s Sentiment Litmus Test

TL;DR Heavy is the head that wears the crown during a Wall Street bull run, and Nvidia’s status as the king of the ongoing generative AI boom. Read More.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown during a Wall Street bull run, and Nvidia’s status as the king of the ongoing generative AI boom means that the stock can be especially vulnerable to the prospect of weakening investor appetite.

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) became Wall Street’s most exciting story in 2023. The chipmaker rallied some 239% throughout the year, smashing through the $1 trillion market capitalization glass ceiling before peaking at a cap in excess of $2tn.

The optimism, fuelled by the ongoing generative AI market rally, continued to make waves in the first-quarter of 2024. NVDA rallied almost 90% in the opening three months of the year to continue its strong spell of dominance.

But finally, at the beginning of April, the stock took its biggest tumble in four years. The wider implications of the Nvidia sell-off are likely to shake up the entire generative AI market...

How to Create a Steel Base Plate Design Web App Using Python and Viktor

TL;DR Design steel base plates with Python. Calculate area, thickness, concrete strength. Viktor SDK turns code into web app for 3D visualization Read More.

By @kamalsamaila [ 18 Min read ]

Steel base plates are placed under steel columns to safely transfer the design forces to the foundations.

When steel columns bear heavy loads with small cross-sections, directly applying the loads to the foundation could lead to punching failure. Thus, it’s crucial to use a base plate beneath the column to distribute the load over a larger area.

This article provides a guide for creating a baseplate design application using Python, leveraging steel geometrical properties stored in CSV format.

The application will assist engineers in easily determining the required base plate area, thickness, concrete bearing strength, and additional width.

Furthermore, by utilizing the Viktor SDK, we can seamlessly transform our Python implementation into a web application.

This SDK offers the capability to visualize our structure in a 3D view. Let’s dive right in and take action!..

Sinking of Lusitania

The German U-boat U-20 sank the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania on May 7, 1915, during World War I, leading to the death of 1,198 people, including 128 Americans. The ship was torpedoed and sunk by U-20 off the coast of Ireland. The U-boat was under the command of Kapitänleutnant Walther Schwieger, who fired a single torpedo at the ship, causing a massive explosion that sank the liner in just 18 minutes. The sinking of the Lusitania outraged public opinion in the United States and contributed to the eventual entry of the United States into World War I. The incident was a turning point in the war, contributing to the development of submarine warfare as a major tactic in naval warfare.
