Good morning. Temperatures will be in the mid-teens to low 30s from north to south with cloudy skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Trump-led NAFTA update looks like a cinch in Congress. Not in free trade-wary Maine.

  • The trade deal is a grand bargain that will likely be one of President Donald Trump’s most significant legislative accomplishments ahead of the 2020 election. But Maine's two Democratic members of Congress opposed it, in keeping with the state's history of skepticism about free trade agreements.
Susan Collins working with ‘small group’ of GOP senators to allow impeachment witnesses
  • The Maine senator told reporters in Bangor on Friday that she was working with a "fairly small group" of fellow Republican senators and party leaders to ensure witnesses can be called in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump. It could be a large development, since many Republicans have resisted witnesses.

Why some people think the term ‘Nor’easter’ should be permanently retired

  • The word itself brings to mind salty old New England sea captains surveying an ominous-looking sky from their ship decks. In reality, however, the term “nor’easter” has rather dubious origins, and meteorologists, linguists and sailors alike have all questioned their veracity. Some linguistic purists say it’s likely a made-up word, not of New England origin. Some folks have even gone so far as to undertake a personal crusade against its usage.
Janet Mills vetoes sports betting bill, saying she’s ‘unconvinced’ Mainers want to expand gambling
  • The move by the Democratic governor almost certainly kills a carefully negotiated bill that passed the Maine Senate narrowly in 2019. A Republican lawmaker said it will give New Hampshire an advantage in the market and make the state lose out on "free money" while Mills questioned the strength of protections in the proposal for youth and others who were vulnerable to overspending on betting.
After heart surgery, this basketball coach has led his team back to the top

  • Mike Adams is just 4 1/2 months removed from open-heart surgery at Maine Medical Center in Portland, where doctors repaired a congenital defect that led to an aortic aneurysm — an abnormal bulge in the wall of the aorta commonly known as the “widowmaker.”

Global issues could cast shadow over Maine’s otherwise recession-free 2020

  • Maine’s economy will continue to ride a growth wave into 2020, countering last year’s rife rumors of a pending recession, experts said.

And while they don’t expect a recession this year, ongoing international trade conflicts and high tensions in the Middle East could cast a shadow of uncertainty on the economy, including affecting oil prices for homes and prices at the gas pump.

  • While she has garnered attention for presiding over a number of high-profile criminal cases, Nancy Mills is as well regarded for her work to improve how Maine courts handle cases that involve defendants with mental illnesses. This work often takes place behind the scenes and with limited funding.
