Common Nordic clinical guidelines can save millions

Medical conditions can be hard to diagnose. The same goes for correct treatment measures. When doctors face these uncertainties, they refer to clinical practice guidelines for advice and recommendations. These guidelines are systematically developed and based on the best currently available evidence.

However, continuously developing such guidelines is both tedious and expensive. Experiences from Norway indicate that a single guideline typically costs in the range of NOK 2 – 4 million.

Now, the Norwegian and Swedish health agencies, the Norwegian research association MAGIC and the Finnish medical association Duodecim have demonstrated that Nordic cooperation on clinical guidelines can save costs dramatically.

Setting the Nordic agenda at Arendalsuka

We are thrilled to see that the Nordic region is strongly represented at the last of the national political festivals in the Nordics – the Norwegian Arendalsuka – which begins this Monday.

The Nordic Council of Ministers have together with Foreningen Norden, Nordisk informasjonskontor i Sør-Norge, Hallo Norden and Nordic Energy Research ensured that an interesting and varied Nordic agenda will be set during the festival week.

There will be debates about the role of the Nordic region in Europe and the possibility of a Nordic defence cooperation, as well as how the Nordics can become the world’s most integrated region. We will also hear what Nordic youth politicians think about globalisation and how the increased focus on national agendas will affect the Nordic agenda, and much more.

Nordic Innovation will also be present – so come by the Nordic stand to say hi to us and the rest of the Nordic family in Arendal!
